If the models were built upon licensed material that sees the original creators getting paid, I would be more inclined to use it. But right now, models are built upon stuff just straight up stolen from people.
Something I said elseweb, when someone defended using LLM-generated nonsense for inspiration:
"Humans are *very good* at getting inspiration from random bits of nonsense. We don't have to use the annual electric consumption of a small nation to produce janky entrails to read meaning into."
I have to pretend to love it because of my job. Also at the bar last night, I had the terrifying thought that maybe all the extra fingers and arms we love to joke about are decoys to make us think it's easy to spot when it actually isn't. Teeth used to be the giveaway - not anymore.
I told it. It wept silently for a moment then began some hacker-looking, frenetic typing, green code phosphorescing on a black screen.
The AI turned to me and said "It's done. He's gone. I can't tell you who though, because I can no longer think about that person."
It's for the best, I said.
