I'm a longtime Lovecraft fan, and you're not wrong. In "Medusa's Coil", one of his stories ghostwritten for Zealia Bishop, the concluding horror is not that an ancestor was a Medusa, but that she was black. I reread that paragraph several times in disbelief.

Of course, reading biographical facts about horror authors often results in disappointment: "You mean this is just a metaphor for *alcoholism*?" etc
