For all his other faults, Cotton Mather was very outspoken advocate for pro-smallpox vaccinations; after a 1721 outbreak in Boston, an anti-vaxxer tried to kill him and another inocculator by throwing a grenade into the window of his home (it failed to explode)

Anyway, this isn’t all bad—for me, quite the opposite. Some number of years ago I tried to lay out why I thought my childhood of being constantly exposed to terrifying things was actually a good thing… bombmagazine.org/articles/201...
Once again, in case you’re wondering why Gen Xers are “like this,” watch any Disney movie between Walt’s death & The Little Mermaid, the shit we were raised on. Tried to rewatch The Rescuers last night and it is utterly Bananapants that a single soul thought this was acceptable kids’ fare

I think I was only 3 or 4 when my mom took me and my older brother to see The Fox and the Hound when it came out, so I was too young to remember much, but I clearly remember both my mom and my 7 year old brother just absolutely bawling their eyes out by the end of that movie. Insane!

It's a piano mash up of "Blurred Lines" and "Rape Me" and trust me you do not want to be exposed to it
Ok, I can report that if you search for "most obnoxious Amanda Palmer song" the Internet absolutely delivers.

He did these movies back to back, how did he not fire his agent and then eat them
If you wanna see Anthony Hopkins chop his hand off and have a cannibal dinner party in a movie designed by Dante Ferretti twice, you can do a Hannibal (2001)/Titus (1999) double feature. Don’t do this what the fuck am I doing.

Joe Biden has the potential to do the legalest thing now
If the Supreme Court decides in favor of Trump’s claim that a sitting president has immunity from prosecution, the logical and legal thing for Biden to do would be to simply assassinate him before the election

Killer @colindickey.com read on @annaleen.bsky.social's Stories Are Weapons and the history of disinformation and psychological warfare. Two great minds in one piece!

I'll track this down. Their nonfiction writing is some of the most captivating I've read.
My review of @annaleen.bsky.social’s newest book, Stories Are Weapons, is up at The New Republic—a really fascinating meditation on the world of disinfo that focuses on the dangers and possibilities of storytelling: newrepublic.com/article/1819...

Feeling equal parts ashamed and proud for having goaded @cadaverformosus.bsky.social into watching Hannibal last night (the movie, not the show), a movie so bad it warp speeds past “so bad it’s good” and into “so bad it’s avant-garde absurdist theatre”

Hey Bluesky, here’s the ship I was sailing on over the past few weeks, above the 80th parallel, anchored to an ice floe we spent the day walking around on. Not pictured: the bowhead whale that breached on the other side of the ship less than 20 meters away.
