An important point about SCOTUS's decision is it is not based on a statute or a special emergency like wartime. They held, without any textual basis, that the Constitution requires that the President be immune from criminal prosecution for "official" acts at all times, forever.

If the country survives, I’d really like to see how a con law prof tries to explain this to their students in the year 2050, after the decision has been repudiated. “Oh, so there was basically a steady march towards justice for 200 years, and then we had a bit of a Behind The Music level breakdown…”
