I wonder if there could be fully decentralized social media where users self-host their own data on a device or in the cloud. Pub/sub is via brokers that are cryptographically blind to the social graph and content. Basically how TOR works, but queueing and delivering posts/DMs instead of IP traffic.
This gets at my issue with Mastodon (and a lot of federation, honestly) in that a) it’s an online HOA and b) “What if you combined the shallow observations of Twitter with the high-stakes chamber play of a BBS?” is a something LITERALLY NO ONE ASKED FOR.
