Feels like we’ve moved on, as a society, from Japanese Breakfast. Sad but inevitable — unsteady combo of smart, charismatic star, good melodies, and the flattest vocals you’ve ever heard in your life.

(Post inspired by listening to “Good Luck, Babe!!” again, Roan effortlessly zooming up and down her range)

IMO I think the issue is she doesn't release new music fast enough for the broader mainstream audience she was starting to break into and slowed down on touring. The machine wants to be fed but the underground DIY scene she came from doesn't always operate at that pace.

Listen, Stereolab had a good long run even after Mary’s untimely death and if Laetitia hadn’t gone full Peterson I might have gone to their recent oldies tour. And Laetitia makes Nico sound like a Korg tuner

Full Peterson? What did I miss?

Ah I’m seeing it’s old news, and that she backed away from support of Peterson in 2018. Well, these things have a long half life

Had no idea. Saw one of Stereolab’s first post pandemic shows (felt like it too) and her one woman solo tour earlier this year, which was surprisingly good.

I really enjoyed the soundtrack to Sable

She’s a good songwriter who writes vocal lines out of her range, it’s too bad!

She should invest in a vocal coach; it worked out great for Thom Yorke!

I am glad that so many different acts are receiving attention these days, it's much better than when I was growing up and WSHE only played the Doors, the Who, Led Zep, and Pink Floyd. That's my positive spin.

I think it's great that a show like CBS Saturday Morning regularly devotes a segment to a band I've never heard of and gives them mainstream exposure. That's where I first heard Middle Kids, years ago. And Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers and other up-and-comers.
