The moment Pogacar attacked and Vingegaard, rather than only pursuing, looked back, presumably to see where Evenepoal was, pretty much tells me the #TDF2024 is over as a real contest…

Pretty wild to hear clips from the RNC about how crime is rampant (it's way down), our borders are open (crossing are down by half), LGBTQ rights are endangering our society (they don't), and guns keep us safe just literal days after their nominee was shot by a cis white dude

but, but… 💫prestige💫 and 💫service💫 💀
Elsevier,Wiley,Taylor&Francis,Springer Nature&SAGE revenues are in billions. Academics do almost all work: research, writing, refereeing & editing journals. Publishers don't pay us for work; they then sell journal access to the universities that fund the research & editorial labor @ exorbitant cost🧪
Academic journals are a lucrative scam – and we’re determined to change that | Arash Abizadehwww.theguardian.com Giant publishers are bleeding universities dry, with profit margins that rival Google’s. So we decided to start our own, says academic Arash Abizadeh

Starbucks is now a proud RNC sponsor, in case you still go there

This has been a recurring conversation over the last few weeks… “Oh, if my right-wing pal is casually racist and transphobic, I simply change the topic of conversation.” No way. Fuck that.
Of course I can be friends with people I disagree with. I have at least 3 friends who didn't like THE LAST JEDI and that's okay, I still love them even though they're wrong. But a disagreement over *fundamental human rights* is still a deal breaker.

Having read about Musk’s latest antics…I’m moved to yet again ask, “what will make people stop using Twitter…or posting content from Twitter…?” 🧐

I 'really enjoy' how much being an academic is basically being a middle manager in the research/admin endeavor.

Anyone still posting to twitter. You need to stop. There is no good reason, and self-promotion is the worst of all reasons.
Dipping back into Twitter to lurk on assassination stuff and truly, from the bottom of my heart, unless you have massively curated lists, no one in media or politics should be microwaving their neurons on there.

Musk really hates it when things are not about him...

A fantastic, although very busy, final week at work. The highlight? Maybe seeing these exquisite(ly deformed) rocks in the BGS core store.

😵‍💫 Still hungover from last night’s leaving drinks, but these absolutely amazing gifts are making things better… …fancy whisky, a stylist running cap, chocolate, and a hot cup (with a free coffee from the most-excellent ManCoCo thrown in) get a solid 10/10 👌🏾

Please, please stop talking about parliament this way. This is not a matter of 'rebels' forcing the PMs hand, this is democracy. MPs representing their constituents interests, government policy changing as a result of the views and arguments presented in parliament.

Wes Streeting is a disgrace to queer solidarity and to evidence-based policymaking. That he is Health Secretary will lead to more suicides among trans youth in the UK.

Enjoying a deep dive into the varied world of #carbondioxideremoval while reading the #CDRPrimer. Lots of techniques for taking CO2 out of the atmosphere, with geology playing a role in many of them! ⚒️

I’ve lost track now of when I removed my Twitter handle from my work email signature. Given my work and the community and connections I built there it was a sad but necessary day. Today I added my Bsky handle to it. Please don’t make me regret it 🫣

nope nope nope nope nope. you do not need a truck to drive to your office job. outsized cars are a drain on this planet's finite resources
Bigger cars - SUVs and pickup trucks, which have 25-40 gallons gas tank - need bigger batteries to become full EVs and lead to range anxiety. So, make both the battery (60-80 kWh) and gas tank (15-20 gal) the size of sedans and fit them into a big car. Best of both worlds! 2/4
