Feels like any time a southern school names something after a confederate, it’s out sacred duty to re name it “William T Sherman High” by force

They do it mostly to prove that they can. It’s a display of power to say “get back into line” to those who thought the world was moving forward instead of regressing.

When someone opens with this, buckle up, because you are about to hear some racist shit.

The right (mostly white) find growth& change so threatening. 😱 It’s a lot like how they’re still making us “pay” for electing a black president. One step forward and they freak out and push us ten steps back. They know how to obtain seats of power & use the legal system…we should do the same.

We need a new sherman

Justice and history don’t have a “forward” because we are not on a track. Even straightforward measures of human experience like life expectancy go up and down over time. All of the bad things we deal with right now, even some diseases, were invented or exacerbated by “progress”.

They specified that money to make the changes has to come from private sources and not the school's funds.

Confederate names? As in the civil war and slave owners and all that? Why?? 😳

The goal is to let people of color know that they aren't welcome while maintaining plausible deniability. It's the same reason they proclaim the civil war to be about "state's rights" when we know they mean slavery. Because we fucking let them get away with it.
