The Trump campaign aims to use today's shooting as a sort of Reichstag fire to incite his supporters to step up street violence while calling for more state repression targeting his enemies of choice. A thread. 🧵⬇️

Sure, lots of U.S. stations set all-time extreme heat records in the 1930s. But the globe was nowhere near record-hot. Bob Henson provides great context on the records, which were due to a combination of natural variability and poor farming practices. yaleclimateconnections.org/2024/07/why-...
Why were the 1930s so hot in North America? » Yale Climate Connectionsyaleclimateconnections.org Climate skeptics sometimes point to heat records from that decade to dismiss the reality of global warming. They're leaving out crucial context.

A great passage from Gabriel Winant, historian at University of Chicago, on JD Vance in n+1. www.nplusonemag.com/issue-45/pol...

I also want to point out that Vance's whole "professors are the enemy" schtick came after he profited enormously from universities. Nowhere was "Hillbilly Elegy" pushed more than on college campuses. He cashed in with six figure speaking fees to talk about Appalachian poverty.

This whole excerpt tells you multitudes about our current political moment.

oh man I missed this fucking gem just casually platforms (unchallenged in headline and synopsis) the authoritarian lie that the people opposing authoritarianism are the ones responsible for violence

Explainer: There's exactly one standard in America. If Dems call out Trump for his fascism, it's incitement. If Republicans demand violence, it's free speech.

Update: Donald Trump, Jr. has endorsed Jack Posobiec's new book on the "Christ-hating Communists" who Posobiec thinks a future Trump administration should use the power of the state to destroy.

Interesting thread and quoted posts about journalists. Unroll @skyview.social
I actually disagree. The professionalization of journalism USED to be a bulwark against random assholes showing up, doing interviews, and styling their "content" as "journalism," when it is largely opinion and bias. This bulwark was weakened with the rise of the blogosphere which enabled the above.

As someone who went to journalism school, and was trained specifically in running a newsroom, US media conglomerates have enabled the erosion of our civil rights, the circulation of intolerance, and the normalization of oppressive ideologies. We have a moral responsibility to point this out.
As a semi-former journalist who went to journalism school and is friends with lots of journalists and defended US journalism for a very long time: US big-media political journalism absolutely HAS gone down a shameful, disgusting road, and saying that isn’t an illiberal act.

Taraji P. Henson did a huge public service calling out Project 2025. Earlier today, Kevin Roberts, chair of Project 2025, threatened violence: "We are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be." It's Christofascism. Make no mistake.

This is one of the most dystopian signs I've ever seen. Republicans are quickly turning this country into an unrecognizable freakshow.

Yes, it seems to be a non-issue that 78-year-old Donald Trump was incapable of staying awake during his own criminal trial. He's a spring chicken, you see, the very picture of youthful vigor.
didn't read the NYT piece yet but did any NYT reporters see Biden repeatedly falling asleep in public or was that only Trump

I trust Brits thinking 'it's a foregone conclusion so why bother to vote' are watching events in France and the US. It is *never* a foregone conclusion and you *always* have to vote against the bad people because they will sure as shit vote against you.
