Direct Messages (DMs) are now available on Bluesky! Learn more about the built-in safety features and how to use them 🧵:
Now available: DMs! Start a private conversation with a friend directly on Bluesky within the Chat tab. 💬 Update to the latest version of the app (1.83) or refresh on desktop to start chatting!

By default, only people you follow can start conversations with you. To change this, check the settings in the DM interface. You can allow DMs from no one, only people you follow, or all Bluesky users. It’s up to you!

Blocked someone? They won't be able to DM you. Additionally, you can easily block users right from within the DM feature.

You can report DMs directly to mods, who will review reported messages for Community Guidelines violations. Mods can see the reported message and surrounding messages for context to assess your report.

In rare cases, we may need to open your DMs to investigate broader patterns of abuse, such as spam or coordinated harassment. Rest assured this would only be done when absolutely necessary to keep Bluesky safe, and access is extremely limited and tracked.

Infractions may result in temporary or permanent loss of DM privileges or even full account takedowns. Please use DMs responsibly!

This first version of DMs has limited features (no images or encryption yet), but we'll be adding more safety enhancements in future updates. Enjoy connecting with others via Bluesky DMs!

This means attackers and other bad actors also have access to your DMs, as they're not end-to-end encrypted by keys *you* control. Which means DMs are 100% *not* truly private and NO sensitive information should be put into them, *ever* (i.e., DMs, here, are no better — or worse — than DMs on X).

Yes, as the devs have repeatedly said.

Honestly, how about no images/attachments ever. Will stop 100% of unsolicted sexual pictures.
A suggestion for DM images, how about we cannot send them immediately but rather after a conversation has already been going a bit? This would prevent…well, take a guess.
Oh, and encrypted messaging is a must in my opinion.

I vote for defaults to no images, images can be enabled on a per conversation basis and has to be done by both people in the conversation for either to send images,.

It's funny because almost everyone asked for no DMs yet here we are. We didn't want this to be Twitter 2.0 because of DMs & unsolicited d*ck pics & spam DMs (yet here we are...)
