Today I received a pin for 5 years of service, exactly 9 years after I started working here. Hopefully the same person isn’t keeping track of time until my next sabbatical.

Just wrapped up some field work in the Sierra. This beauty sugar pine has a story to tell.

🔥New paper out in @jappliedecology.bsky.social showing that thinning and prescribed burning can be beneficial for forests beyond their primary goal of reducing the risk of high-severity fires ! Many thanks to my co-authors @mhurteau.bsky.social, Dan Krofcheck and Alisa Keyser 😊
Thinning and prescribed burns in dry conifer forests in southwest US are able to... 🌲Protect old trees 📈Enhance diversity 🔥Benefit sub-alpine species conservation by reducing fire transmission from mid to high elevation 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/1365...

I’m handling this manuscript and I’ve had 5 reviewers auto-decline. That means the system emailed them 2-3 times over six days. Since we go sequential with the invites, that’s 30 days without securing a reviewer.

In our new paper, we use 20 years of #remotesensing data for over 9500 fires to document the "Biogeographic patterns of daily wildfire spread and extremes across North America." Congrats to postdoctoral scholar Jared Balik for leading this effort! 🧪🌏🔥
You know what's cool? >20 years of #remotesensing data that allows one to produce #wildfire progression, or day-of-burning, maps. Such maps have enabled some cool studies. The pub below describes a process to produce such maps. I distribute code, with no strings attached, to anyone who asks.🧪

Waking up early in the field has its advantages. Namely sipping coffee in a camp chair and watching this.

You would think that the government would learn from past failings and how they treated soldiers.
An outstanding report from ProPublica - an indictment of how the agencies are mistreating their most valuable resource and it's not just the woefully inadequate level of compensation but also the failure to attend to cancer and emotional trauma and stress. www.propublica.org/article/wild...
“It Feels Impossible to Stay”: The U.S. Needs Wildland Firefighters More Than Ever, but the Federal Government Is Losing Themwww.propublica.org Highly skilled firefighters are the last line of defense against wildfires, but that line is fraying because the government decided long ago that they’re not worth very much.

@damienrius.bsky.social and I skied one of the most scenic couloirs either of us have ever skied. Turkey chute is stunning. I love the moment at the top before descending that always makes me question my decision making.

It is possible that I have now had more course syllabi desk rejected by curriculum committees than I have had manuscripts desk rejected by journals. Maybe I just won’t resubmit this time.
