Every year, my alma mater emails me an invite to a football game, “a football offer exclusively for public health alums,” and every year, I think about how they don’t really know me or my work at all. @profgoldberg.bsky.social

We've been trying to tell you for years...people like trains, especially to/from places they really want to go.
Thousands have ridden the month-old Amtrak Borealis, a new rail line between Chicago & Minneapolis-St. Paul, exceeding expectations. “There’s a strong demand for short-distance corridor trains in the United States… for travelers that don’t want to drive or fly.” www.fastcompany.com/91153405/eve...
Even Amtrak was surprised by the instant popularity of its new Chicago-Twin Cities route - Fast Companywww.fastcompany.com The success of the new Amtrak Borealis bodes well for other regional train routes.

Is this where Linaeus worked before he went back to Uppsala? [I should really know this]

I hate it 😩
We have a problem in medical/health research whereby methodological expertise is downgraded as "technical", and respect instead flows to those that can effortlessly regurgitate what other authors feed to them via paper abstracts and conclusions.

This little botanical garden in Amsterdam is critical in the history of the modern world. It’s small, only 3 acres, but so much is represented here. These dynamics are wrapped up in history of science & medicine as well. Read Hal Cook’s amazing book! De Hortus is one of my very favorite places.

Ohaiiii Amsterdam, my favorite city on the planet!! Yes it is high tourist season but for me its loveliness is never muted.

We need more Art Bots on here!! There’s few Old Masters, for example. No Flemish or Dutch Golden Age, no Italian or Northern Renaissance painters, etc. Let’s go, Blue Sky!

I think the best team won #Euro2024 and I always prefer that outcome for any sport about which I care, even if that comes at the expense of my team (not the case here I wasn’t rooting for any team in particular but the principle holds for me even when I do have a time) Congrats to 🇪🇸!

England has to be feeling pretty good about that decision to leave Grealish off for Palmer

Robert Putnam may know why we're lonely, but tellingly it's Putnam's wife who--like millions of other women--does the work of keeping Putnam from falling into loneliness himself. And we wonder why men are pushing marriage and trying to limit divorce. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/13/m...
Robert Putnam Knows Why You’re Lonelywww.nytimes.com The author of “Bowling Alone” warned us about social isolation and its effect on democracy a quarter century ago. Things have only gotten worse.

The coffee here at Man vs. Machine is ludicrously good. Best coffee shop I’ve visited in Munich. The music is 90s style hip hop, the vibes are great, and even the IAQ is solid.

One of my favorite hiking trails is pretty much right where this fire is.
Rapidly developing fire in the #Boulder Flatirons just west of town. I saw flames briefly. That’s the #NOAA building in the foreground. Conditions are horrific: temps near 100F, bone-dry west winds, and after the driest May-June on record here.

The Munich-Prague (380 km) train connections are shockingly inefficient. You can travel by private car in about 4 hours, by bus in ~5 hours. High-speed (?) train takes 6.25 hours at best with at least three transfers. Wut???
