ICMYI I wrote about the importance of being a citizen archivist. We've seen so much incredible art and writing from marginalized people, and we need to preserve it in the face of a huge, well-funded backlash. This is something concrete you personally can do! buttondown.email/charliejane/...
We Should All Be Archivistsbuttondown.email Lately, I keep obsessing about two seemingly opposing but interrelated trends: 1) The past decade has seen an incredible bounty of art and self-expression...

For folks who make zines, there's a zine special collection at San Diego State which includes all manner of self-published work. There aren't many better ways to preserve something than having it added to a university's special collection.

There are multiple USA zine & fanzine collections, some are general purpose, others have specific focuses like counterculture, LGBTQ, women, fanfiction. You can find them in many universities (Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Iowa) & some nonprofits owned. Google fan/zine archives

When I think back to the founding mythology of the US in particular, I did not appreciate (when I was a school kid) how being in a marginal community is the thing that often keeps you out of situations where big important societal changing decisions are made.

And of course, marginalized communities tend to suffer the most consequences from those decisions. This is, afaict, still a major blind spot today.

I will inform my wife I am not "filling up the house with obscure RPGs I will never play", but, rather, I am "a citizen archivist".

You could do worse than reach out to my amazing colleague Sophie if you need some advice about a larger community project. They are a gem of a human. www.slziegler.com

Yeah, this is why I buy local physical zines. There wouldn't be any other of these copies in the world, especially not in my overlooked Australian city, and they need to be kept somewhere. An extension of why I go after physical media.

I always think about how much it sucks that, thanks to HTML5 making video embeds a thing, it's easier than ever to make everything downloadable, but because webdevs are actively trying to make the web a worse place everything is a pain in the ass to download
