People keep saying, “why are folks losing their minds over one night?” Well, it wasn’t just one night. It’s avoiding press conferences. It’s skipping a Super Bowl interview. And, post-debate, it’s “just 32 minutes of combined public comments over 5 days, none of it off the cuff.” wapo.st/4f3LCBI
Biden thought he had it under control. Then it got worse.wapo.st The inside story of the Biden team’s failure over nine days to contain the crisis from his debate with Trump.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... This time Trump is not just a celebrity with a lot of sexual assault allegations, bankruptcies and loopily malicious statements, as he was in 2016. He’s a convicted criminal who orchestrated a coup attempt to steal an election both through backroom corruption
Why is the pundit class so desperate to push Biden out of the race? | Rebecca Solnitwww.theguardian.com Yes, Biden had a bad debate – but so did Trump. The media is once again repeating the mistakes of 2016

Agree the media should do a much better job of explaining the stakes of the election and Trump’s explicit threats to basic institutions. That said, I simply don’t understand how, post-debate, anyone can write a sentence like this: "They are not reporting that he is a loser; they are making him one.”

Solnit piece also blames media/pundits, when in fact it’s mass public that’s been most concerned about age. Also, this is off: ”The main argument against Biden isn’t that he can’t govern…but that he can’t win the election.” No, concern he hasn’t shown ability to prosecute case of winnable election.

The mass public may be concerned (I’m not there) but it’s hard to believe they’re more concerned than the NYT? Also you skipped the part about the press conference count maybe low because stutter / disability, but governing going great. 1/2

I grant you I’m more inclined to trust WP than Guardian about US — or was, before the WP started shapeshifting into the Telegraph? Has that happened?

Mass pubic has been saying for months that Biden’s too old. All arguments for a strategic distance from press were plausible until debate, but with that self-created fiasco, post-debate silence, mediocre ABC interview, Occam’s razor cuts in one direction. bsky.app/profile/owas...
Listening to interview and disheartened. Even without questions about capacity, Biden fails to make a strong case for himself—lots of self-aggrandizing comments about foreign policy, little about #1 issue, cost of living—and waits ~18 minutes in (!) to offer a strong critique of Trump. #notfine

“In June 2020, 36% of voters said Biden was too old to serve. By 2024, number had roughly doubled. In Times/Siena poll conducted in Feb, 73% said he was “too old to be an effective president.” In April poll, 69% said the same. In June poll, 70%. After debate, 74%.” www.nytimes.com/2024/07/07/o...

Obviously news conferences are important, but agree with the Guardian author it's less surprising that someone with a speech disability gives fewer. Didn't we already hash these points? The main things are a) his administration needs credit for governing well & b) Dems need to get elected.

I'm still amazed that the Biden team accepted that debate format. The NFL/Idiocracy TV format tilted very heavy towards the TV GUY, big surprise... Trump does understand TV! So I am more willing to believe Team Biden is failing to take other things seriously. Like age, or the need for smash mouth
