Warm morning on the river. A beaver for company. Lost a brown which I would have landed if I used a net. That fish and a smaller one took a size 14 streamer hook pattern with the working name of 'Bill'. As in hackle that resembles the hairdo of Bill the Cat. #rivers #flytying #flyfishing

Calm morning and water is a bit higher. Blue Heron keeping a level eye on me. Two experimental flies on offering today - which I realized I didn't photograph last night. On my way here I was thinking about silk lines and HL Leonard cane rods.. #rivers #flyfishing

Watching an older gent wave magic from his cane rod. #flyfishing #traditional I think it was a case of watching someone who has forgotten more than I'll ever know.

Osprey flew over me as I was fishing. Clutched in talons was a very decent brown trout. Well done, bird! Incidently they do drop their food sometimes. I spoke with someone who had a brown land in her backyard as she stood there. The osprey did not try to retrieve her meal. #rivers #wildbirds

Partridge and Purple Spider with a pearl tag. One cast - one fish. Second cast - snagged and lost on backcast in tall grasses behind me. #flyfishing #northcountryspiders

Long weekend for us in Canada - we'll, really it's always a weekend when you're retired - and my fly rod stands in the corner 'ahem-ing' me to go up to the river. Alas, it's a kitchen reno weekend. The trout can rest easy. #flyfishing #housework

Today is National Women’s Fly Fishing Day, a celebration dedicated to honoring and promoting female fly fishers! Which means I need to finish my work asap so I can get out on the river!

Cooler morning on the river with a Whitetail Doe and twin fawns cavorting in the shallows below me. For 20 minutes they were the complete centre of my attention! One take on a very long-legged soft hackle Mallard and light Cahill (hackle 4x the hook gape). #rivers #flyfishing Wonderful morning.

The fish brought to net isn't the measure of success but it does preceed it. What has changed with the taking of the fish - that is, or is not, the measure of success. A few mayflies and a blue heron for company this morning. #rivers #flyfishing

Lovely overcast morning on the river. No takes, no activity to be seen at all but I was in the groove casting with only an osprey watching me from his perch. #flyfishing #rivers

Someone DM'ed me about exactly how many flies are in my vest when I'm on the river. A lot less than you might think. While still bearing in mind the water, conditions, insect activity, I carry a small box with a handful of flies. It comes down as often as not, which flies I am confident in that day.

I've been studying traditional salmon flies the last few nights with the thought of taking a pattern and morphing it to something one could present to resident browns. I mean present and conceivably have a take. Many of those flies could be mounted on display on a wall. #flytying #traditionalflies

"Best laid plans...." et cet. Unfortunately never got to cast to the brook trout at the beaver pond yesterday. The closest I got to fishing was to collect a bagful of wild turkey primary feathers and a couple turkey vulture primaries as well. New supplies for fly tying. #flytying

Came across a photograph I took a few years back. Still wondering what the hell the wheat did to be treated this way. #ruralsigns
