HALIFAX: boil water advisory in effect until further notice. Here’s the HFXAlerts emergency alert
Avatar
How do you know if you're in the affected area, because it's so broad? Do you live in the blue region on this map? You're affected. DO NOT DRINK YOUR WATER!! The Pockwock water treatment plant has been letting untreated water into the water supply & this water may not be safe for consumption.

Do not brush your teeth with the tap water Do not give your dog or cat tap water Do not wash your face in tap water Do not wash dishes in tap water (yes, even the dishwasher) Do not just put it through a Brita filter, it's still not safe. BOIL YOUR WATER, a rolling boil, for at least 60s.

Update on this situation: a cause and a pseudo-remedy has been put in place. The cause of this boil water advisory is due to a power outage at the Pockwock treatment plant, which allowed a “small amount” of unchlorinated water into the system. They are working out how/where to flush

As of 7:55pm, the boil water advisory is still in place. All water, if it’s going on or in your body, should be boiled for 1 minute prior to use.

And a further update on the Halifax Water website: UPDATED: 8:14 PM JULY 1 Boil Water Advisory - Beaver Bank, Middle & Lower Sackville, Hammonds Plains, Bedford, Halifax, Timberlea, Spryfield & Herring Cove Anywhere in the app that is serviced by Pockwock is included in this boil water advisory.

And now, TWO HOURS LATER, we have an emergency alert. Well done, Halifax. Lol.

Shopper’s on SGR is open for peninsula folks, but they are sold out of water and do not have any in the back. FYI to Halifax peeps

Yes, they should have people monitoring these things even on Canada Day.

Halifax water is just as bureaucratic. I bet the power failure occurred around 1pm, took them 1 hour to get things figured out, 1h to realize the water was contaminated, 1h to reach someone that can make a decision, 2h for them to make that decision, 1h to send. Then 2h for the emergency broadcast

If you regularly get shower water in your eyes, up your nose, or in your mouth (many, many, many people do) then no. Don't shower. If you can remember to close your eyes tightly and close your mouth, and avoid getting your face wet, shower away. Things traveling to Cholera+ countries teaches you

(plus things being a microbiologist teaches you...) (bacteria don't obey the 5 second rule, in case you were wondering. lol)

This link just says anything that would make you consume it, so don't brush your teeth with tap water. It doesn't say a shower isn't safe, though you could potentially get it in your mouth while showering I suppose. www.halifaxwater.ca/news/boil-wa...

But also I don't know that I would be comfortable getting E.coli water in my eyes, which inevitably happens when I shower? I honestly don't really know where the boundary is anymore.

Yes this is what I was going by, they aren't saying don't shower, just be careful not to swallow any. The person I was responding to advised to not get unboiled tap water in you or ON you.

Interesting. I thought that chlorination had been largely replaced by UV irradiation.
