IMO this is a straight-up ageist and ableist image, no?

The president is 81 years old and is declining mentally at a rapid clip. It's not ageism to make a cover acknowledging that fact

The image isn’t about his age or cognitive abilities though. It implies that having a president who needs a walker is “no way to run a country,” which is ableist.

It's a symbol for old age not a comment on mobility aids.

Either they meant to imply that an individual who needs a walker should not be president or they should have chosen different cover art.

Ah yeah bc one person saw it and got offended it obviously only means what that one person thinks it means.

Look at the other comments on this thread and other threads on BlueSky. It’s not just one person.

The president of the United States cannot speak coherently, he cannot remember the names of Dem donors he has met many times, he cannot function after 8pm, and he's risking handing the election to trump bc he won't drop out. There are bigger issues than this magazine cover.

You not only have knowledge of their intent, you don't even have a way to infer intent, except what's clear; this is a story about a guy who has clearly aged out of his ability to do the job.

Then why didn’t they use a picture of him?

A walker is not a sign of cognitive decline. The fact that you think a walker “acknowledges” that is kind of the problem being pointed at.

The cover indicates that people who need walking frames are incapable, even if they meant to apply age.
