am finding myself increasingly just as irritated by this perspective as i am by the perspective that there are “real” and “serious” pop culture artifacts that should be taken much more seriously than others
Paradoxically it's clear a lot of these people only like what they like because there's some kind of social reinforcement to it, which is also not our problem?
eh, i don’t know if i believe that, i think most people like what they like authentically. like, i don’t think people say they like luke combs because their peers like luke combs, i think people just like luke combs, which is fine.
When I was much younger, I was hanging out at the tobacco shop, talking to the old guy behind the counter. A kid walked in and asked about the tobacco in Swisher Sweets and the guy told him that he didn't have that. I started to trash the kid's taste after he left and the old guy stopped me:
this is broadly my opinion about all things, i just get touchy about the idea that *not* liking something on an individual level says anything about you other than that you don’t like a particular thing.
It's wild to have to explain that tastes differ and not everybody enjoys the same things, but apparently people are out there taking the Straussian reading on "tbh I'm not super into boygenius"
Yeah one of the most powerful things I’ve learned is to just roll with it when people try to neg me for liking what I like (or don’t like), because they short circuit if you DON’T get defensive or upset. It’s really fun. 🤣
