I've been rewatching 30 ROCK, not so much because I'm a self-hating masochist, but out of curiosity to see how badly it's aged. Like milk, as the kids say. Who knew all those topical jokes about Condi Rice and Peggy Noonan wouldn't have staying power, other than anyone who's ever read DOONESBURY?

Anyway, besides that, it's also cementing my belief that every criticism of Tina Fey as a writer/showrunner is spot on; she's weird about black people*, weird about gay people, and REALLY freaking weird about any woman not a radical centrist middle class WASP.

(they fucking lampshade this CONSTANTLY, which isn't the same as not being weird about it)

Anyway, if you ignore that the A story is usually about a white woman incapable of running her life without a right-wing man telling her what to do, and constantly being proven right to do so, despite that man being very obviously mentally unwell, the show stuff is usually okay.

And if we're going to do that thing about how fictional people voted, Liz Lemon absolutely voted for Trump in 2020. She was just really...uncomfy...about the breakdown of "law and order". Jack Donnaghey died in his sleep two days before he was set to testify about his activities on Epstein's island.

To be nice, the only thing that's saving the show is basically anything with Jane Krakowski (see also "women who's lived experiences differ from Fey's in how they are treated), Tracy Morgan as chaos deman (see also, well...) and Jack McBrayer as an eldritch being in human form**

**(Fey is also weird about poor people and rural people, but at this point, let's just chalk it up to Fey has a very narrow idea of what is normative)

I read her book, not surprisingly, her daddy was republican.
