Remember in 2016 when there was a lot of pressure for Trump to divest from his private business because it's unethical for a president to make money off the presidency especially while in office, but then he just refused to do it and now people don't even really care anymore?

I keep seeing “#art NEEDS business to guide it” and boy is that the largest load of shit dumped on artists ever. All the greatest creations in art, games, film, and music came from out of fucking nowhere and subsumed the world. Business had fuck all to do with it.

When this came up at Warner Bros. Games, and got pushback from the businessmen (of course) I said, “okay, a team led by the business guys should be able to build something that has the cultural significance of Minecraft for about 100k. Where are those games?”

Art is not something that can be broken down to components and reproduced in the lab and mass-produced like a fucking cake recipe. And that’s the fucking point. That’s what people love. That’s what they pay for. The thing beyond all this bullshit. Art.

This is why the main work of business in creative industries is to gaslight artists into believing they’re irrelevant without them. Artists become dairy animals, producing art — you know, the thing that moves the whole thing forward — belittled to the point of exasperation.

They pitch you the old “there’s a life of corporate safety where you can work 40 hours a week, take 2 weeks vacation a year, and retire in 25 years.” NONE. OF. THAT. HAS. BEEN. TRUE. FOR. DECADES. It’s as much a fiction as “get a degree, and that gets you a job!” is.

There only REAL choice left: Be happy making what you want, and barely get by (or perhaps more). OR Work for a corporation that owns everything you make, that you are going to be fired from in a few years due to the endless pursuit of LINE GO UP. It's a no-brainer.

The core issue is the business mantra of "endless growth" — on any siginifcant timeline, any company you don't directly control will (at the very least) ATTEMPT to screw you over for you art.

Cannot emphasize enough, never do work for “exposure.” Not only is your time worth something, but if the company is making money, you should be making money, too.
