You guys sound like those YouTube people who have zero TCP/IP training who promise VPN as simple protection from whatever. Computers are generally very good at record keeping, saving data and recalling it. The promise of simplistic foolproof privacy is not what I think EFF should be doing in 2024.

It's true, Tor doesn't protect against every threat model, like for example if someone gets spyware onto your device or if you sign into an Internet service that can be subpoenaed while connected via Tor But it does protect against most network-based privacy threats, and so still has privacy value

To me EFF should be pushing law changes, behind the scene documentary / end-user education on exactly what goes on with data about users, ethic issues. And maybe even philosophy of the whole economic system of engagement. While you are at it, can't you solve world peace though Internet faith?

And more wild off-topic (On THC right now, hope you are having a good weekend) - I've seen those VPN companies go to YouTube channels as sponsors across topics where the person doing the pitch has no clue about networks or end-user agreements (Netflix geo location). 90% discount code red flags?

Tor is funded by the ONR and DARPA. Anyone who uses Tor - or even searches for anonymizing software - has their IP logged by the NSA and tracked via their XKeyscore system (inside and outside of the US). This has been known since at least 2014. Tor has never been safe.

There are instances of TOR frustrating the FBI to the point that the only way people were caught were through rats. See: most of the dark web profiteers caught. The failures were all opsec not TOR. I of course am not all knowing but am very interested. Please show me the light if I’m incorrect.

What about a no log vpn like NordVPN with kill switch instead?
