I wonder if the "it's a republic not a democracy" people could name any other country in history that was also "a republic not a democracy."

Always depends a lot on your internal definitions of "republic" and "democracy", but People's Republic of China is a republic (power is vested and exercised through the representatives in the party, not through a monarch), and is not and does not claim to be democratic
