I'm incredibly bullish on America's future. I get it's a bit hard to see these days--the death throes of unpopular authoritarianism is pretty scary and there are real problems in the immediate term--but I definitely think America's best days are still very much ahead.

watching british election returns the question struck me: what would democrats do with a landslide? what’s the wish list? beyond saving democracy of course.

A 4th of July tradition - asking the Internet how many hotdogs they could eat in 10 minutes. I remain convinced I’d max out at 4. The sodium alone would end me.

just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

This is a dumb article, but also isn't the author's first rodeo, and his other writing shows the real reason he doesn't vote "But my principal reason for declining to take part in elections is moral. It involves, I suppose, a private objection to democracy itself." theweek.com/articles/802...

Tomorrow is the fourth. If America weren't great, we wouldn't care about keeping it. I love that our country is truly multiracial, all of us have "American" names, we care a lot less about class than other countries (in my work, this means lots of 1st gen students indistinguishable from the rest)

They need to get that this isn't just a talking point to talk past, but that their campaign is in trouble and they need a campaign reset. If they're willing to do that, great, better late than never, lfg

Breaking news: President Biden and his senior team said they accepted the grim ultimatum they’ve been hearing from almost all quarters of the Democratic Party — to demonstrate his fitness for office or face a significant effort to force him to step aside.
Biden and aides concede he needs to quickly demonstrate his fitness for officewww.washingtonpost.com Critics have been shaken by his relative inaction to directly address the panic ignited by his halting debate performance last Thursday.

i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)
Something Has Gone Deeply Wrong at the Supreme Courtwww.theatlantic.com Jurists who preach fidelity to the Constitution are making decisions that flatly contradict our founding document’s text and ideals.

If Team Biden can't allay the fears he is too old, voters will be implicitly pricing in Harris taking his office during the next term anyway. So you either comprehensively demonstrate the "Biden old" stuff is bogus, or if you can't (because true) or can't (because incompetent), get out of the way.

Gonna have to reform the curricula a bit. Conlaw is now part of American History. Soviet studies is run by the law school. Journalism is now a minor in sport studies. Computer science is run by the business school, contains no programming, and business majors are dualed with "creative fiction"

occurs to me that bribing the president is now /always/ legal, since in every case the only way to distinguish gratuity from bribe is via evidence that could never be admissible

if your instinct is "calm down, surely this is an exaggeration," allow me to assure you that it's really not
"Don't worry, if the president imprisons his political enemies, you can still get a writ of habeas corpus." "But to prove that's why you've been imprisoned requires proof of..." "Presidential motive!" "And under Trump v US, presidential motive is..." "Inadmissible!"
Avatar
At the risk of being tiresome in reposting my own writings on the separation of powers and executive accountability, since prominent scholars are now in the news saying "habeas corpus will still be OK"— Montesquieu's insight was precisely that it won't be. dx.doi.org/10.13140/RG....

“you hysterical lib do you REALLY think — LIB (communist) — that Trump would order the shooting of a domestic political enemy? Cmon” He did already! I happened, he tried to! Sure an unarmed Black Lives Matter protester in front of the White House is a different kind of political enemy than Hillary…
also, as we point out in this piece, Trump repeatedly told senior officials in his administration (thank goodness there wasn’t a “yes sir” uttered in these cases) to shoot protesters or migrants in the legs… www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol... Chances are high that would kill them!
Trump Allies Try to Convince Supreme Court He’d Never Order Hit on Rivalwww.rollingstone.com A pro-Trump group tells justices he could never have the military kill non-military targets — even though he allegedly suggested shooting protesters.

Living under authoritarian regimes is both relatively boring and normal AND incredibly corrosive to the human soul. These things can absolutely co-exist. This is why everyone needs to resist authoritarians, even people who privately assume they’ll be just fine.
The damage this causes across generations (even if the regime is short lived!) is so hard to grasp if you haven’t lived with it. It touches every aspect of life. It makes trust impossible, and without some level of trust and a belief in the possibility of justice, *nothing in society works.*

I really cannot emphasize how catastrophically bad the Court's ruling was. I do my best not to exaggerate about these kinds of things but I am still kind of in shock

Americanists and lawyers ask, what does the Constitution say? Comparativists ask, who controls the High Court, the militia, and the clerics?
6-3 for total immunity is devastating. This isn’t a ruling for 45, this is permission for 47.
