The panic about students feeling unwelcome is out of touch with what I’m seeing in the classroom. For my racism & medicine class I traded our discussion board for a private response. In this red state (IN) students were overwhelmingly grateful to learn about health inequities, & racism specifically.

Adding my unwavering support to Christina Cross as well as the respected sociologists who accurately explain that describing large datasets using similar terms is both expected & standard practice. Efforts to label this approach plagiarism are inaccurate & unfounded. docs.google.com/document/u/0...

It’s the constant onslaught of viruses that caught me off guard, a November virus followed by COVID in December “If you pick up the flu, get RSV two weeks later, and then are unlucky enough to get Covid, your immune system takes a beating.” Boost if you can, consider masking too…

Been staying off of social media as much as possible. It is going to be…a year. I encourage scholars of color, women, those who are marginalized in academic spaces to find ways to protect your energy & find connection IRL as often as possible. Find spaces that help recharge you.

This tracks. At least 2 of the 8 people planning to gather with our family on Monday have tested positive for COVID. And my case is so mild (so far) I wouldn’t have tested if not for Christmas around the corner.

During the COVID public health emergency people using Medicaid were able to maintain their coverage. In 2023 this changed. For the first time in 3 years they had to prove their eligibility. We interviewed a stratified random sample of (~100) of these individuals, wrapping fieldwork yesterday.

New report from PRB on young women's well-being cites research from @emhernandez.bsky.social, @amandajean.bsky.social, Monica Oxford and more.
Millennial young women in the US are working hard, but they're still losing ground compared to GenX. They're LESS LIKELY to give birth as teens, drop out of school, or be incarcerated. But they're MORE LIKELY to die by homicide, suicide, or complications from pregnancy/childbirth Read bit.ly/49SmjzX

Are we going to talk about the TikTokification (etc.) of medical diagnoses? The ways it does (or doesn’t) medicalize & decrease stigma? ADHD, T/trauma, other topics? Fascinating (and important) to see the intersection with the stress process literature.
