Great Sapphirewing, the most brightly-colored bird from this project. It's pretty bizarre that the tiny, sparkly hummingbirds are part of a group whose other members are mostly brown and grey 🐡🪶

Just finished this vibrant Cassowary bird using colored pencils in my Leuchtturm 1917 sketchbook! Did you know the Cassowary is one of the most dangerous birds in the world? Their kick can be lethal! 🦅✨ #sciart

When you defend your thesis, be sure to acknowledge those who helped you. It takes a lot of time, energy, and emotion to advise students well. It's my job to do that and I don't need a parade, but just seeing my name on a list of helpful people goes a long way in feeling like I was useful

Another paleocolor project bird painting! This is an Oilbird, which lives in caves and can echolocate 🐡🌿
Another one: Whiskered Treeswift, a very fancy little guy. These pieces were made to be composited onto a single tree 🐡🪶

Here's the first piece from the paleocolor project! This is one of nature's top glarers, the Tawny Frogmouth. The project looked at the preserved colors of fossil birds in the clade Strisores, which includes living frogmouths, nightjars, hummingbirds, etc, so I painted living and fossil species 🐡🪶

This female Powerful Owl has recently taken to roosting outside the hollow during the day. Previously she has only had one Owlet each year & has stayed in the nest during the day up until when the Owlet emerged. Maybe a sign it's getting crowded in there & there more is than one? #birds #brisbane

I’ve been very lucky to see beluga in the Churchill river a number of times, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this. There are a few hundred whales here churning up the water, herding capelin into a bait ball to feed. It was incredible! 🌿🐳https://youtu.be/sgM21bM0wd8?si=QDNac_tw5hYbmFsm
