This weekend I got hired to teach a science class and ended up coming home with a bunch of goldfish from the science classroom. They will be getting a properly sized tank tomorrow but for now they are in the old guppy tank. You can see Dora in the back sizing up her new neighbors (not snacks, Dora).

I am trying to find information about emergency cycling a fish tank with goldfish already in it, but even DuckDuckGo is mostly giving me useless apparently AI-generated word salad pages and contradictory information. Filled the tank with water the goldfish came with + transfusion from pleco tank.

Thanks. I think I am doing everything I can right now- keeping a close eye on nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia. I probably bit off more than I could chew but the school was planning to dispose of the leftover fish however they could so there wasn't much I could do.

Yeah, whatever happens, you tried to save the little buddies, so you're the hero fish gotham deserves.

Yeah, been there. Good luck and offer stands if needed

I actually considered sending you a message right away.

I had the same problem. New tank light comes with a blue light setting and I was trying to figure out if that's a night light or just an optional daytime mode and the results ran from eh it's fine to YOU WILL DESTROY THE EARTH so idk idk 😐
Avatar
So, for one thing the blue light is now popular for those genetically modified glo-fish abominations, so certainly not going to destroy the earth. And if you’re doing corals with it, I found blue LEDs useful for promoting soft corals and discouraging algae
Avatar
No corals, I guess mostly concerned that the two amano shrimp and one tetra will get all kerfuffled with a blue light on all night. Some people were saying it emulates moonlight which seems fine but everybody needs beauty sleep I don't want to interrupt 😅
Avatar
Yeah I think you’re better off going truly dark. Remember that many organisms see different wavelengths of light very differently from us.

honestly, that many comets should be in a pond. But best you can do is best you can do! If you can get a hold of Fritz Zyme it will help add necessary cycling bacteria to the tank and won't harm the fish!
Avatar
theyll probably endure just abt anything you need to cycle them thru, being comets. like the mighty magikarp reveals its dragon roots in its powerful nature this way lmao

filtration is best done w the ol fashioned spongue filters for goldfishes cuz theyre such poopers. this is a really good site for buying crap like that www.aquariumcoop.com or at least windowshopping. spongue filters look like this and need an air pump to run. the filters are "unsightly" da best
Avatar
I can get filters like that nearby, no problem. Currently the tank is set up with an enclosed filter.
Avatar
when i had 4 full grown adults i needed a double setup of that filter shaped like a set of lungs to take care of their poop >.> perhaps... idk. colleges nearby might have a library lobby that could take a pair? or the kids could take some home once properly setup & folks informed lmao
Avatar
ideally when adults each one of these guys needs 10 gal to themselves. i'm not sure how big they are just lookin at a pic, but a good rule of thumb is that 2 gal for 1inch of goldfish. they can exist in more cramped conditions but it's stressful and results in increased risk of illnesses

I am in Ulsan, South Korea. Probably a bit far from you. :(
Avatar
I've put out a call for people nearby who might be able to house some of them, and am contemplating where I might be able to put another couple of aquariums in the house.
Avatar
daaamn yeah korea is a bit far :( but theyre very easy to keep! they dont care what the water temp is, they eat just about anything you care to feed them. including plants. but a filter and a tank of water and theyre good for ten years of something to stare wistfully at hehe
Avatar
They're still pretty small right now, so I'm hoping I can increase their living space/rehome them as needed.
Avatar
yeah they prolly got like... 3 years? before they really need to be upscaled bigtime
Avatar
Well that calms me down a lot... We can remove the old bookcase from the end of the hallway and set up a big aquarium there.
Avatar
they take their time growing yea!! n they do eventually seem to top out at about 4 in/10cm? mine started in a ten gallon tank and i didn't need to like rush into the 50 gallon by any means haha
Avatar
good golly thats a lotta comets. where you at? i have a 50gal thats stable so could take a few off your hands. good news!!! comets are hardy as fuck bad news!! they poop so much good news!!!!!! im fish brained
