Once again: folks should probably consider switching to Firefox. Especially if you, I don't know, rely on ad-blocking to navigate our glutted-as-shit modern internet, for instance? arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024...
Google Chrome’s plan to limit ad blocking extensions kicks off next weekarstechnica.com Chrome's Manifest V3 transition is here. First up are warnings for any V2 extensions.

Also, all those chrome-based browsers that you think of as different from Chrome but are technically not? Guess what change-over applies to them too. Gueesssss.
Avatar
does firefox blocks ads in youtube? I switched from Opera to Brave because Youtube managed to block the videos so long as I used adblock
Avatar
The Enhancer for YouTube addon still works to block ads for us in Firefox. Both desktop and mobile. Just watched a YouTube video ad-free on our tablet in mobile Firefox the other day, though that was an exception since on mobile, we usually use NewPipe.
Avatar
I'm trying for myself and, the past couple minutes I've been using FF in my pc, no ads on youtube.
Avatar
the bad part is that FF is eating 2gb from my 8gb ram.
Avatar
I've been running FireFox for years now and uBlock Origin + Sponsorblock works like a charm for YouTube.
Avatar
Ublock Origin on Firefox blocks ads on Youtube perfectly

so hear me out, that, but also skewing with the data that they're getting by clicking on every ad automatically, so all the data is borderline useless adnauseam.io
AdNauseam - Clicking Ads So You Don't Have Toadnauseam.io A browser extension that clicks on every blocked ad to fight advertising surveillance.

Avatar
well, today it stopped working. the player doesn't play.
Avatar
It works for me. Go to the preferences and update the block list or turn the autoupdate on.
Avatar
I reinstalled. it worked for two videos then stopped.

I'm not switching until Firefox can get anywhere close to Vivaldi in tab management. YOU CAN PRY IT FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS
Avatar
Enjoy broken adblocking yo
Avatar
So I always see everyone shouting IF IT'S BASED ON CHROMIUM YOU'RE FUCKED, but I'm not sure that's the case. The Vivaldi developers think there's a good chance they will be able to keep their ad blocking as effective as before. It will be interesting to find out over the next few months.
Avatar
Also, given the choice between less effective and blocking and decent tab management, I'll choose the tab management. It's just so useful.
Avatar
Im from a time where ads were static images and tabs didn't exist So to each their own with that
Avatar
been meaning to look into floorp its a firefox fork that seems customizable like vivaldi
Avatar
Google REALLY doesn't want anybody using their shit, do they? You either die the startup or you live long enough to become Microsoft.
Avatar
Hey, hey, let's keep Microsoft out of it, they're also way better than this somehow. Google is just out there living there best Let's Just Be Evil Now lives.
Avatar
oh hold on now don't forget Microsoft's upcoming update that will turn your entire operating system into an advanced keylogger with video spying capability
Avatar
And that's not even counting their whole "if you don't have this ONE specific (unnecessary) component on your mobo you can't run Win 11," which came after their entire "oh, you thought you owned this OS you paid for? lol, lmao, WE will update it and you can't say no. Giving a presentation? UPDATED."
Avatar
We can block that, but, yes
Avatar
Has anyone ever mentioned in this context how good, ethical, and user friendly Firefox and Linux are? No, pr— probably not. *loud, awkward cough*
Avatar
But the NSA asked really nicely for it
Avatar
Microsoft is marginally less bad than Google right now, but the bar is very, very low.
Avatar
I think we can all agree that most corporations/businesses of this size have been living their best evil lives way before they started blocking ads, let's be real.
Avatar
I gave up on Chrome long ago. It's entire purpose is to stick in adverts and drill them into your eyes.
Avatar
we use chrome at work. every time someone does a search, the first link is an ad (sponsored) link that security will block. I opened a ticket with Google support to turn off sponsored links. They told me to install an ad blocker.
Avatar
It's my main browser. Better than the de-googled Chromium browsers out there. Chromium is just bad now
Avatar
Haven't used anything Chromium-based in a year, because *waves hands at Google and the internet*
Avatar
Avatar
Yup time to move to da fox
Avatar
Curious what will happen on my beloved Vivaldi Browser
Avatar
Vivaldi has a built-in adblocker (though IDK if it's just like an MV3 extension behind the scenes or similar to Brave's Rust-based adblocker). That being said I trust Vivaldi to make the right decisions more than Mozilla nowadays, and "We have adblock" is not really compelling to most users.
Avatar
(and if anyone asks: I use Firefox lol)
Avatar
Again the FBI recommends that everyone uses ad blockers. You know things are fucked when even the government is warning you to do something corporations hate.
Avatar
Proud Firefox user. And a pihole user. We don't get ads in our house. And I made it look gorgeous to boot.
Avatar
already there. the branding had me hooked since 08
Avatar
God, the internet really is just being turned into a place where bots funnel traffic of other bots towards ads by other other bots, huh? Almost the same way rich fucks really just want to Venmo each other money that has a 1/4 chance of being a higher/lower number, rather than run actual businesses.

I use Firefox for personal browsing, but I use Chrome for work related stuff because my job uses the Google business suite and some of the features work better on chrome. Anyway, Adam Conover did an amazing video about how awful Google is. I recommend watching it! youtu.be/P7NHABs76mg?...

At this rate, android is literally the only good thing google has left
Avatar
Up next, Google locking down Android the way Apple locks down iOS... 🤪

DON'T YOU FUCKING GIVE THEM IDEAS!
Avatar
They are already doing it Look at how few phones even bootloader unlock You have to find a freaking international model Samsung just for bootloader unlocking Pixels, surprisingly still allow it Asus got sued over saying they would allow it, then not Motorola maybe? That's all I can think of.
Avatar
*sighs* I remember my Motorola.... Loved that phone.
Avatar
I get so much shit from my kids and coworkers for still using Firefox.
