One of the big themes of racist violence in this period was the perpetrators being set off by the sight of Black vets in uniform, like it was particularly infuriating that they thought fighting for this country gave them a claim to it
a lot of the stuff that the Republicans and Bush would say about "america's enemies" when we were kids, like they hate our way of life and our freedoms, actually just apply to right wingers/confederates (I view it all as one long tail)
