I'm going through some notes from ~15 years ago, and I see that someone from the Philippines told me they call presidential candidates "presidentiables." :)

My first job out of college was working for an insurance broker. This is true.
Lifetime caps: some insurers would say that once a person had run up a (lifetime) bill of $2M or so, they were no longer insurable, kicked forever to Medicaid and Medicare. NICU nurses told me abt pre-ACA kids who would hit their lifetime cap before their first breath of fresh air.

I got a note from a reader who picked up "The Grammar Daily" at Barnes & Noble and found a small error (ugh). But mostly all I heard is that my book is AT BARNES & NOBLE!!! I didn't know it was there. How cool! 🎉🎉🎉

Library funding is almost always justified through patron numbers. The more people a library serves, the more funding it gets. So even if you don't regularly use a public library, get a library card. It costs you nothing and helps everyone in your community.
today is my NINETEEN YEAR anniversary working at my local library In honor of that, I ask you to get a card to your local public library today! If you ALREADY have a card to your local public library, check out their digital resources! Their summer programs! And yeah, they have books too.

You can look at a burnt down house and say it's pointless and everything is terrible and give up. Or you start gathering stones and bricks and tools. And yeah, sometimes you can do both. I will always turn to the Arthur Ashe quote for help: Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.

I recorded episode 1,000 of the Grammar Girl podcast today. I can't decide which is the most appropriate emoji. So many options! 🥳 🤯 😎 🤪

Thanks for reminding me of the one I saw in yesterday's NYT: "She was taken by ambulance to the plane with her husband, a nurse and a paramedic." On first pass I read this to mean her husband was a nurse and paramedic. (Which is why we shouldn't be dogmatic about using the Oxford comma.)

I just thought of a new "commas matter" example! Drop dead gorgeous. Drop dead, gorgeous.

Have you ever dreamed of doing something a little wild, like taking over your hometown newspaper? In today's Grammar Girl episode, you can hear all about it from someone who did. I talked with Samantha & Greg Enslen about the Tippecanoe Gazette, which they're bringing back to life in Ohio. 1/

You get to hear about two cool topics in the new Grammar Girl episode: 1. What goes into making a new dictionary. 2. The very first words being included in the Oxford Dictionary of African American English, including "kitchen," "Aunt Hagar's children," and "do rag." Listen: pod.link/173429229

Lately, I hate seeing publication titles in quotation marks. I don't know what happened, but suddenly I think it seems ugly and unnecessary. The titles are capitalized. That should be enough. I know it's heresy coming from me, and I'm not telling you not to do it. But every day I'm tempted not to.

I really wish Bluesky had video because I have a clip of Scott Brick doing the "Dune" Bene Gesserit voice, and not only is it the best clip from that interview, I think it'll likely be the best clip I ever get from any interview. Here's a link to that part in the YT video: youtu.be/we48Td4yEcA?...

Well, this made my day! Syelle Graves included me in the acknowledgements of her academic paper about why people start sentences with "so." It never gets old hearing I helped people along their language journeys. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

What should I ask a couple who recently bought their hometown newspaper? Tomorrow, I'm interviewing my frequent contributor, Samantha Enslen, and her husband, who bought their hometown newspaper. I want to hear all about it! But I also want to ask your questions. What do YOU want to known about it.

I'm reviewing the final edits on tomorrow's Grammar Girl episode with Kevin J. Anderson and Scott Brick of "Dune," and it's so clear they both absolutely love what they do. And man, I absolutely love talking with people who love what they do. Their joy makes me happy too.

What words do you think capture the zeitgeist of the year so far? We're about halfway through 2024 (ack!), so I want to get a jump on collecting candidates for the word-of-the-year vote in December. What do you think the 2024 word of the year should be?
