The term “free white person” in the foundational 1790 Naturalization Act discriminated by race, and among those classified as white—as @greeneland.bsky.social notes—it discriminated by class. 🧵2/3

Could anyone suggest a historiographical essay that would be a good model for grad students? Big bonus points if it’s in the area of labor history, broadly speaking. Thanks! 🙏

Can anyone suggest a great summary of Robinson’s Black Marxism — esp his notion of racial capitalism— for grad students. I’ve looked at Robin Kelley’s pieces and they don’t quite do it. Other ideas?

Run, don't walk, to read @tannerallread.bsky.social 's article on the theory of "state supremacy" that has its origins in the 1830s Native American Removal Era. That idea in the present, unmoored from its racist historical + political context, is still guiding SCOTUS decisions on Native sovereignty.
Ecstatic to finally have my article, “The Specter of Indian Removal,” in print! And if you haven’t read it yet, you can access it here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

An undergrad student of mine is researching the relationship between labor and urban planning post-WWII. Any suggestions on secondary sources? I've recommended Sugrue's Social Origins of the Urban Crisis and a few others. #skystorians thanks!

This is cool. Reminds me of David Drake, the enslaved potter/poet who carved poems into the pots he made
I continue to write on #18thc graffiti, & the fun fact I feel I must share w/ all of you is that the poet Robert Burns wrote almost 30 poems/mottoes on windowpanes in Scottish inns, most lost now. Some were lost b/c emigrants took the glass panes to Australia & New Zealand and broke them in transit.
