I know I said my next project would be a canoe, but we needed a new kitchen island so I did that instead.
I decided to use some tools I recently inherited from my grandfather to make a faux live edge type banding around the tabletop. I used scrap walnut pieces and then regular 2x8’s.
The dimensional lumber was easy enough to join. I used dowels and it went fine.
For the walnut banding I had to get a bit creative since none of the pieces were the same size. I used my bandsaw to get the pieces approximately right, and then carved them using a dremel and angle grinder.
And here it is with the first coat of finish - I used a mix of boiled linseed oil, polyurethane, mineral spirits, and a *touch* of dark stain to help bring out the walnut edges’ features.
