The Siege of Burning Grass by @premeemohamed.com is a novel that fits the zeitgeist. It is the right novel to read while contemplating the courage it takes for those with no political authority to speak out against state-sanctioned violence. Review: hugoclub.blogspot.com/2024/07/the-...

Sexual predation is clearly not limited to the arts, and so-called "whisper networks" exist in every profession. And ultimately these networks always, always fail. They don't reach the most vulnerable and they don't ever remove the offender or prevent future harm.
I often wonder if abusive people are drawn to the arts, or if a certain amount of notoriety just makes people turn to shit. I am involved in a lot of different art scenes, and every single one has a whisper network about some big names who nobody feels they can address directly.

We didn't realize this cover was by Michael Whelan! We love it.
THE SNOW QUEEN (1988) Acrylic on Panel - 36" x 24" Joan Vinge provided plenty of inspiration in the pages of this book, and in fact, my first response was that there was way too much epic quality to capture in one illustration. 1/3

If only you could hear Kevin's tut-tutting about the sound quality of our pilot recording 😅
Friends, we've had to rework the schedule a bit due to travel and illness (nothing to worry about). For July we're working on releasing salvageable bits of our pilot. Our next read will be This Is How You Lose the Time War. Release date TBD, might be August. After that, A Fire Upon the Deep.

This article will definitely get a shout-out in our upcoming episode on This is How You Lose the Time War.
I feel strongly about but also a little vulnerable about this topic, because I came up in the 2000s writing movie reviews, and film bros were unbearably attached to authoritative voice—which I think can be a block when it comes to writing/watching/experiencing more varied art. So:

everyone is the world is playing CYBERSTRUCK, the fun new mandatory game in which you are eliminated when you see your first cybertruck in the wild rules are similar to whamageddon, but with no end date: • the cybertruck must be real, in the wild • as soon as you notice the cybertruck, you are out

We love that everyone instinctively tags us in the worst quotes SFF has to offer!
This quote from “A Case of Conscience” by James Blish makes me really look forward to @hugogirlpodcast.bsky.social’s episode on that novel: “"I don't hold with women in the sciences," Cleaver said, with abstract, irrelevant irritation. "Get their emotions all mixed up with their hypotheses.[…]”.
