Sure, July is so hot that I feel like I’m being cooked alive every time I walk to the coffee shop, but it’s also moth portrait season, so it’s not all bad. Found this Rosy Maple moth on Saturday night in the Pine Barrens 😍

Gastroptreon pacificum, easily the hardest organism I’ve tried to photograph (besides larval octopus babies)!! Out of 106 photos I got ONE that was actually in focus because these girlies be MOVING, and a fast moving organism can be really difficult for a macro lens to focus on But she is radiant

We saw Pacific Batwing Slugs tonight!! Hoping between the three of us (me, @jensseattle.bsky.social , @invertebabe.bsky.social ), we’ll have at least a few good camera pics - these slugs were so little and moving and grooving so much it was tricky to image them. For now, phone pics:

I'm catching up on #CephalopodWeek content (since I didn't have much online time this week) and this ink-terview is FASCINATING! I did not know about pygmy sperm whale ink 🤯 nor that melanin binds to heavy metals so ink helps remove toxins! 🦑🧪
The most wonderful time of the year has arrived: #CephalopodWeek.  To celebrate, Dr. Lauren Simonitis joins us to discuss the science of cephalopod inking.
Why Do Cephalopods Make Ink?www.sciencefriday.com Squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish use ink to confuse predators and to communicate. But there’s still a lot we don’t understand about inking.

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 6/8 Vampire Squid, which isn't really a squid, is an oddball like no other. It's more closely related to all octopuses than squids, which explains its weird, mixed up anatomy. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

I hope everyone knows the correct posture to assume when discussing Bigfin Squid a.k.a. Elbow Squid
#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 2/8 Bigfin Squid, one of the most striking squids, was the first squid included in our roster. The earliest specimens were found dead in a bad shape. They lacked the extremely long appendages, hence the name "bigfin". 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

I just spend two amazing days bumming around Roman ruins in the south of Italy, so my contributions to #CephalopodWeek are these two absolutely stunning more-than two-thousand-year-old mosaics from the apodyterium (changing room) of the women’s baths at Herculaneum
