Some personal news: Very excited to announce my third book with PublicAffairs/Hachette. The Defenders will be an in-depth, deeply reported look at the world of criminal defense. Coming in Spring of 2026!

Man, it's been a day. Here's a pic of my friend's dog at a cookout last night to lighten the timeline.

I'll talk more about this when we finish our new app release, but today is a point of favor of why we haven't enabled replies on @seabirdreader.bsky.social. It can be nice to have a place to share your work without randos hounding you!

Texting my girlfriend about what to bring to a cookout at a friend's house and autocorrect changing "pils" to "pills", trying to make it a very different kind of party.

Throwback to July 4, 2020, a year when we all got a little weird and I celebrated the holiday with a red (Campari), white (absinthe), and blue (blue Curaçao) pousse cafe. Thoroughly not recommended.

One of my favorite Portland inside jokes: excellent tropical drink haven Hale Pele took over their space from a previous tenant called Thatch Tiki Bar. Rather than take down the whole sign, they just removed the "ch".

Cocktail break: for a while I've been wanting to do a tropical take on the Rob Roy. Made it for the current Multnomah Whiskey Library menu. Toasted coconut-infused scotch, Yzaguirre blanco vermouth, Carpano Antica, Novo Fogo Colibri cachaça, Tempus Fugit creme de cacao, and coriander-lime bitters.

I know things are getting bad when the ex-prosecutor starts feeling like the best option, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Spent another evening trying out the new, very large Ooni and I've gotta say, this thing rules. I've made plenty of good pizza in my apartment but there's just something about slinging a very large pie into an 800-degree backyard oven that's hard to match.

Made my summer playlist of music I've been digging from the last year or so. New songs, covers, lots from bands I've been fortunate to see live recently. Enjoy! open.spotify.com/playlist/3wS...

Meanwhile in Portland last night (which allegedly would have burned down if not for Trump), we had hip marching bands and street magic.

Judging by the feeds, my plan of doing the other things I had planned for tonight and just hoping the debate would go well enough for Biden does not seem to be holding up.

These starter pack invites are a great idea, and thanks for including me on this one even though it's been too long since I wrote for @liberalcurrents.com (a really good publication you should all be reading!).

I know it's been a rough period for SF but still had a fantastic day there: -Breakfast at Saluhall, a new Nordic food hall -Drinks and snacks at the incredible Lazy Bear -Mates of State kicking off a new tour -Brennivin Midori sour at Bar Iris -Riding in a car that drives itself!
Pretty convenient for me personally that Waymo opened to everyone the same morning I land in SF! Got to take a Cruise self-driving taxi last time I was here and I'm eager to try another.

I'm a big fan of Ooni ovens, and while this one is obviously enormous and pricy, I also think it has their best design so far.
Got to try out the new, very large, very hot Ooni Koda 2 Max pizza oven this weekend with @mrgan.com and friends. This was super fun to cook with!

However you feel about self-driving vehicles, I encourage you to experience them at least once just to see what it's like. Love it or hate it, the technology is real and nothing proves it quite like getting a completely driverless ride in downtown San Francisco.

In the span of just a few minutes got an unsolicited and unwanted message from Meta AI and spotted my first Cybertruck in Oregon. This is the dumbest future.
