Compact was a joint project of some “anti-woke” socialists and some “anti-woke” nationalists and so it comes as quite a surprise to learn that one of their senior editors has been exposed as a National Socialist.
no part of this is not absolutely hilarious

When a person can't admit they're wrong, it's a sign of weakness and insecurity. I think that goes double for a fucking newspaper. The NYT, once the 'paper of record', has been reduced to posting like a racist aunt forced to change one word in their post to avoid a Facebook ban.
Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

Wow, real banana republic stuff. I'm glad our presidents can launder money and associate criminally without worrying about this kind of thing.
Reports: Brazil police have indicted Jair Bolsonaro for money laundering and criminal association

Yes. We honestly need to be even a little cornier about this. Democracy is good. One person one vote is good. A society where people of all faiths, genders, sexualities, ethnicities, and nationalities get on productively together in peace is great. Flush your doom pills and cynic pills down the loo.
Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

It is always a good time to read or reread Frederick Douglass's "What, To the Slave, Is the Fourth of July?" It is pure fire. One of the greatest speeches in American oratory. More and more people are appreciating Douglass!
Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.
(1852) Frederick Douglass, "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth Of July" •www.blackpast.org On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass was invited to address the citizens of his hometown, Rochester, New York. Whatever the expectations of his audience on that 76th anniversary of the signing of the D...

Would that liberals would learn this fucking lesson and direct that scorching irony towards the people who deserve it, and not the folks in solidarity with us.

very much the words of a man who has never once worried, not for a moment, that he would be outside the law
More anti-democratic thoughts from 2018 the NYT allowed this writer to exclude from his current piece. Delivered with an air of detached irony, as if he miiight be joking or exaggerating. But is he?

I’ve done text- and phone-banking, and I find the phone campaigns to be extremely low yield. Actually reaching a person is vanishly rare, so most of the time you feel like you’re just cleaning up a list. Texting has a lot of opt outs & wrong numbers, but it goes faster and has a ~10% response rate.

i agree. also just as a reminder that politics is an argument about the nature of reality, the claremont institute ppl think/claim they believe the same thing.
There’s a part in Ken Burns’ Civil War where someone describes Lincoln as fiercely believing in the Declaration of Independence and I think it’s important to remember that, for all the talk of the constitution, the DoI is our founding document and holds what our ideals should be, and that’s worth it

Donald Trump, serial rapist and longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein, is also a child predator. This is all completely in character. "When you're a star, they let you do it." Arrest Trump. He's a common criminal threat to public safety as much as he is an insurrectionist threat to democracy.
Looks like something useful is happening on the Nazi site - this court document about Donald Trump’s involvement in the Epstein case is going viral This is a disgusting read

As I say, every immigrant is a vote for America. MAGA wants to destroy this, destroy America.
just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

Update. Da'Bomb is an order of magnitude less on the scoville scale, but it is not to be fucked with. Whereas the Last Dab stays localized on the tongue with a short half-life, Da'Bomb colonizes your whole mouth and takes its sweet time.
I'm obsessed with Hot Ones, so I bought the Last Dab. It's supposed to be north of two million scovilles, but after two sittings with it, I think it has a curiously short half life. Very hot, but doesn't linger long.
