Really is nuts that an expectation of adult life is that you can operate a very dangerous machine that can kill you/others if your attention drifts for a second. Also it's filled with things designed to distract you.
I really think that quite a few USians do not consider cars to be DEADLY WEAPONS even when not misused. Like when you get inside the car, does the car actually disappear?

Also even if you're a perfect driver someone could have one beer too many and kill you anyway.

Also if it breaks you probably don't understand how it works and will have to pay a huge amount of money to fix it. New York has problems but I'm eternally grateful it lets me leave driving to professionals.

I've had this belief since I was a teenager in the suburbs. I got my license against my will. I've rarely been happier than the day I knew I was leaving daily driving behind.
