"I know you noticed this if you're a film buff" yeah it helps that Tarantino hypes up those movies by name in every interview and directly uses their musical scores, and they suddenly become easier to see after he draws attention to them
for goodness' sake, when JACKIE BROWN got a DVD it came with so many vintage Pam Grier trailers there was barely room left for JACKIE BROWN.
There are so many valid criticisms of Tarantino but he's not exactly hiding his influences, he loves that shit and wants you to also
Do people honestly not know what an homage is? As another example, casting Sonny Chiba in Kill Bill Vol. 1 was utter genius because of all the samurai films in which he starred.
Them: “Did you know Tarantino just copies other people’s movies???”
Me, an intellectual: “If you think that’s crazy, wait til you see Brian De Palma’s filmography”
I always go with Bowie on this, who was the world's biggest magpie. It's not about whether of not you steal. Everyone steals; it's about who you steal from, and what you do with what you stole. Steal from the best, and make it your own. Do something new with it.
Sting talked about that kind of thing in a interview. He was asked about what he thought of musicians ripping off the Police and he said it didn’t bother him. He said you do something and it enters the musical vocabulary and it’s there to be used.
And I also understand that people learn things at different times but come on, doesn't that knowledge just come pre-packaged when you find out Tarantino exists?!
I’m on that side of it lol. I have huge problems with him that repelled me out of seeing new films of his, but to me there is nothing duller than someone looking at his or Brian De Palma’s and saying “hey wait a minute, you know what I just noticed”
Honestly, my problems with Tarantino have to do with the sense that his films are all co-written by cocaine at this point. I got over the pastiche aspect a while ago.
I really loved almost everything and it was his real-life conduct that soured me, he broke my heart. Once I realized DEATH PROOF was some kind of half-assed self-flagellation for his own KILL BILL behavior (while still not helping Thurman), pfaugh
I'm curious though what would be an ethical way. Does one put up a subtitle in the moment to say "I took this from XYZ?" Does a movie come with footnotes during end-credits?
He’s still actively policing it too. I went over there to call him a dope and caught the block in 5 seconds. Dumbass has never heard of an homage and got all butthurt over it.
