that Tarantino thread going all "did you know he copies things from old exploitation movies???" makes me wish you could delete other people's posts

"I know you noticed this if you're a film buff" yeah it helps that Tarantino hypes up those movies by name in every interview and directly uses their musical scores, and they suddenly become easier to see after he draws attention to them

for goodness' sake, when JACKIE BROWN got a DVD it came with so many vintage Pam Grier trailers there was barely room left for JACKIE BROWN. There are so many valid criticisms of Tarantino but he's not exactly hiding his influences, he loves that shit and wants you to also
Avatar
His characters never stop talking about how much they love these movies, too!

Arranges US distribution for them, screens them at his movie theater,

One of the only things more exhausting than Tarantino discourse is anti-Tarantino discourse, he should be proud

Do people honestly not know what an homage is? As another example, casting Sonny Chiba in Kill Bill Vol. 1 was utter genius because of all the samurai films in which he starred.

I don’t get it. Classic De Palma thriller reaction too, to act like it’s a theft he hopes you don’t notice when it seriously is not
Avatar
I don't get it either. They probably think spoofs from the 80s on through the 00s were outright theft instead of making fun.

I’ve got a few lecture slides somewhere around here on genre and intertextuality that would likely be helpful to them
Avatar
imagine thinking you were blowing the lid off his secret lack of originality, just amazing to me

It's nice revisiting conversations from 1995 though, very comforting

Them: “Did you know Tarantino just copies other people’s movies???” Me, an intellectual: “If you think that’s crazy, wait til you see Brian De Palma’s filmography”
Avatar
lol I’m ancient I remember everyone complaining about how he ripped off City on Fire for Reservoir Dogs.
Avatar
At least those people were right, never seen a worse analysis of his work than this one
Avatar
Yeah Tarantino’s original bashers were 90s tape traders and part of the same culture that produced Tarantino, this current crop of haters . . .

I always go with Bowie on this, who was the world's biggest magpie. It's not about whether of not you steal. Everyone steals; it's about who you steal from, and what you do with what you stole. Steal from the best, and make it your own. Do something new with it.

Sting talked about that kind of thing in a interview. He was asked about what he thought of musicians ripping off the Police and he said it didn’t bother him. He said you do something and it enters the musical vocabulary and it’s there to be used.

Broadly speaking, our culture's focus on commoditizing art has led to an impoverished sense of the cultural commons.
Avatar
Yep. Elvis Costello said the same over the Olivia Rodrigo Brutal hoohah a year or two ago.

Finally got around to seeing CITY ON FIRE this year and yeah, wow, like direct shot lifts. That said... both great movies doing very different things!

Going to start sending these people the 30 year old Mike White videos
Avatar
Followed by “ wow so I heard about Brian De Palma for years and then I watched his films and it’s just like, he’s just like ripping off Hitchcock”
Avatar
I want to carry around gold star stickers and affix them to the sweaty foreheads of people who say that

*delete other people's accounts

hahahaha I forget why I keep not following the guy who wrote that thread, but really he seems all right
Avatar
And I also understand that people learn things at different times but come on, doesn't that knowledge just come pre-packaged when you find out Tarantino exists?!

Pfah. I've weathered enough of the one Rue Morgue magazine writer's brown-nosed defenses of ThOsE aRe jUsT CoLoRs iN HiS PaLLetTe to survive
Avatar
I’m on that side of it lol. I have huge problems with him that repelled me out of seeing new films of his, but to me there is nothing duller than someone looking at his or Brian De Palma’s and saying “hey wait a minute, you know what I just noticed”
Avatar
Honestly, my problems with Tarantino have to do with the sense that his films are all co-written by cocaine at this point. I got over the pastiche aspect a while ago.
Avatar
I really loved almost everything and it was his real-life conduct that soured me, he broke my heart. Once I realized DEATH PROOF was some kind of half-assed self-flagellation for his own KILL BILL behavior (while still not helping Thurman), pfaugh
Avatar
You know who IS ripping off other filmmakers in maybe a not ethical way and never gets called out for it? Greta Gerwig.
Avatar
Avatar
The Frances Ha/Girlfriends comparisons. The Bowie sequence from Frances Ha/Mauvais Sang. Just saying!
Avatar
I'm curious though what would be an ethical way. Does one put up a subtitle in the moment to say "I took this from XYZ?" Does a movie come with footnotes during end-credits?
Avatar
She didn’t direct Frances Ha though
Avatar
Wait until he learns about Bugs Bunny. Aka, TOTAL RIPOFF ARTIST!!! CANCEL! CANCEL!!!
Avatar
He’s still actively policing it too. I went over there to call him a dope and caught the block in 5 seconds. Dumbass has never heard of an homage and got all butthurt over it.
