The rise of the political pundit happened thanks to 24-hour news on cable. No one needed this much analysis before, because the Big 3 focused more on reporting as a prestige product and didn't have as many hours to fill with filler.

Hmm. Goobers like WF Buckley and Robert Novak were considered Very Serious People long before cable news. Seems like the NYC/DC cocktail party circuit and Ivy League secret societies also have a lot to answer for here.
