An under-discussed aspect of Roberts' lawless, constitutionally illiterate ruling in Trump v. US is that it's perfectly in line with the reason Roberts was appointed by Bush in the first place: he's a true-believer in the Imperial Presidency, hand picked to rule for POTUS in the War on Terror cases.
At the time, the biggest issue before the Court was "how much power does the President have to detain, torture, assassinate, etc.?" and Bush wanted a guy whose answer to that was "unlimited." John Roberts was that guy. Ditto Alito, though when he was nominated, "social issues" were more salient.
