In 1893, Black militia companies in Savannah, Georgia, paraded to celebrate the anniversary of the 15th Amendment's adoption. One company carried its flag "with the union down" - by accident, not to signal support for insurrection or contempt for their neighbors. "The oversight was corrected."🗃️
