Ahead of the new Twisters movie, I wrote a post for Slate about how Twister changed storm changing and exposed fissures that were already forming back in 1996. Check it out: slate.com/culture/2024... Huge thanks to @mkn.bsky.social for her advice and @rebeccaonion.bsky.social for her editing.
How the Original Twister Changed Storm Chasing Foreverslate.com Back then, chasers thought the media hubbub would die down after a bit. That was not the case.

The fourth largest city in America is still in crisis under a deadly heatwave & the power company can't get hundreds of thousands of households back online, but you'd barely know it from our national news.

New study by @maibached.bsky.social et al on how emotions motivate support of climate actions and policies finds that "guilt is most strongly related to support for personally costly policies, hope to support for proactive policies, and fear to support for regulatory policies." My thoughts ..
Emotional signatures of climate policy supportjournals.plos.org The optimal emotional tone for climate communication has been debated by scholars and the press, but little is known about the effects of emotions on different types of policy support. In this paper w...

Supercell near Batesville, IN this evening. Might have produced a couple spin-ups northeast of this location, deep in the hilly forests. I was lucky this farmer planted beans here instead of corn.

Important for the public: tornadoes do not "touch down"! 🌪 "Funnel clouds, which build downward from the thunderstorm cloud, are often mistaken for a 'descending' tornado... the tornado itself is found in *ascending* air, and the rotation rate is usually similar throughout the whole column." 1/

Looks like 6-10" (~150-250mm) of rain has fallen in the #Houston metro in the past 24h. Extent of damage will become clearer in the coming days. Would not be surprised if this is another billion dollar disaster for the city on top of the derecho less than 2 months ago. #wx #txwx #beryl #climate

Here's the latest (7/7 5pm) track of #Beryl alongside its threats and impacts and community level vulnerability. The graphics are a little busy, but highlight areas that could be of concern. HTI Data from: weather.gov/srh/tropical #houwx #TXwx @mattlanza.bsky.social @spacecitywx.bsky.social

The NHC has been too focused on communicating the possibility of pre-landfall rapid intensification IMO. I think flash flooding has greater destructive potential than a 20mph increase in winds and heavy precipitation has been forecasted for a while for the region regardless of storm category.
Here's community level vulnerability for the Texas coastline as #Beryl approaches. Houston is also under a moderate category for excessive rainfall on Monday, June 8th, according to the @NWSWPC . #HOUwx #TXwx @NWSHouston @mattlanza.bsky.social @spacecitywx.bsky.social

This describes a lot of modern day storm chasing unfortunately.
Bro you did something dangerous in your car on a road with other people AND you filmed it? That’s so epic how you put a bunch of people in danger for your YouTube channel.

Tropical Storm Aletta has formed, becoming the Eastern Pacific's first named storm of the season, saying screw your forecast. It is the latest "A" storm in the basin on record, beating Ava (1969), which formed on July 3. #wx
The first tropical depression of the 2024 Eastern Pacific season has formed, the latest on record and over 50 days after May 15, the season start date. It is forecasted to stay below tropical storm strength, away from land, and to dissipate by the end of day Saturday. #wx

The center of Cat 4 #Beryl (140mph; 225km/h) is passing just south of Portland Point, Jamaica. With the strongest winds in the northern portion of the circulation, heavy impacts including storm surge are undoubtedly being felt on the island despite avoiding landfall in the operational sense. #wx
Hard to believe this mess is still a strong Cat 4. Ocean heat content data indicates #Beryl had so much energy to work with, allowing it to maintain its intensity even in 25kt of vertical shear (29mph; 46km/h). Everyone in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands please stay safe. #wx

Here is a comparison of smol Cat 1 Hurricane Beryl in 2018 (at peak intensity) and Cat 4 Beryl from yesterday. You could probably fit the entire 2018 hurricane in the 2024 eyewall. #wx
