A thing with linguistics is that many verifiably true things in the field seem counterintuitive to the point of being almost offensive to non-linguists, including professionals in nearby fields. This often drives linguists into a state of frustration and resentment and some of them go a bit strange.

i don't think i've given the Time-Life Our American Century volumes that my aunt kept on her lowest shelves enough credit for how early i internalized the changes in fashion, technology, and culture that marked the twentieth century's decades

in all the (appropriate) memorializing of Shelley Duvall as a performer in the work of male auteur directors, spare a thought for her own auteur work: Faerie Tale Theatre was one of the few actually good media products aimed at children in the 1980s, but because it didn't sell toys it's forgotten

We lost Michael Zulli today. Beautiful, lyrical, mystical storyteller, he was part of the BW Boom of the 80s with his PUMA BLUES, he drew some gorgeous stuff for SANDMAN, and a startlingly fun book about Alice Cooper. All that’s just for starters. Some people, you think will always be out there.

i should note: some of my picks will be scattered through these mixes. many others will not be. i'm trying to give a top-down overview, not a personal preview. but of course my taste still leaves its mark
