Magistrate friend says that this is absolutely a thing. No-one is ever in court explaining why they were weilding a cricket bat.

Cheddar is a great name for a cat. I hope it has siblings called Wedmore, Banwell, and Chew Magna.

Publication does cost *something*, hosting websites, paying copy-editors and so on. But society open-access journals operate with author fees considerably less than the commercial companies. publications.copernicus.org/apc_informat...

Neil was teaching Jazza, after a conversation about being too cheapskate to let Susan go on the course she wanted to. With expertise, but without the warnings that a beginner needs and Neil would consider too obvious to mention...

Could be something as simple as the wrong (invisible) space character. I wonder if it changes if you bung it into Word first?

Or conversely, copy the llm generated text into LaTeX?

I guess from a student pov, even if they write the draft they are using all the tools they can, including sending what they write through a final polish. They may think it's expected of them to produce the "best" writing.

0% is suspicious. How can it be so sure? Might mean it has a quick check online and says "yep, that's pre-2020, can't be AI".
Avatar
That's a good line, stealing that. Along with "scientists* say" *one scientist.

It reminds me of the bespoke planet catalogue scene from Hitchhikers. "However bad your taste, we'll cater to it". I like a jazzy pattern, but maybe not this combo!

You don't want to know who gets inevitably poisoned/picks endangered wild plants in the foraging story?
Avatar
"In space, no-one can hear you giggle" ok who do I know with small kids?
This book is an absurdly adorable accounting of the plot of Alien. They had no right making this horror story so cute. 😭

And apropos of nothing, the goal of describing an entire teaching curriculum on planetary science in verse continues unabated #scienceinverse #sciencepoetry

Absolutely in British English, also "function room" for the big room upstairs at the pub that's hired out for events. A buffet of slightly awful sandwiches and sausage rolls optional.

There's a standard gauge there as well isn't there? I'm sure I plotted it for something.

Gosh I miss the Secret Barrister. I wonder if they are still slogging it out on twitter?

Inadvertently funky plot. (It's spectrum of a subtle change in tide modelling at a bunch of sites.) #Datavis , though I don't think I'll stick with this version!

My new funny, educational picture book THERE ARE NO ANTS IN THIS BOOK is out today through Tundra, with art by Anna Pirolli. I love this one. I think it's genuinely funny, and it's full of strange real ant species. Thank you to the great @alexwild.bsky.social for reading over an early version.

Ouch, those windows would be annoying to colour in! It's so frustrating that this junk exists. It's not filling a gap anyone wants, it's just consumerist crap. And hard to throw away, they always end up with 1.5 pictures done.

Well that's the background music for the morning sorted. It means nothing to me.

Yes. It worked better here a few months ago, something has changed but I'm not sure what. Possibly just more people highly stressed. I've taken to muting more terms, which helps a bit. Muting the F-word (a particular right wing mouth piece) helped a *lot* with the UK election.

Good clickbait, trying to spot various ways to tell it's faked. Glad you didn't post the link :-)

Even Liverpool Riverside doesn't manage that.

Note that there is now an option to temporarily deactivate your account, so people do have the option of switching it off and picking up later without a backlog of notifications. I don't know this person but I have seen others use this to step aside a few days and let the noise quieten.

I am *shocked* if geology departments are no longer bearded. When did that go away? Sometime around beards becoming fashionable?

Yes, they are Icelandic, I've followed them a while. And really quite a nice and interesting poster who almost certainly doesn't deserve a pile-on, so I hope they aren't driven off here by all this.
