UGH. Ten years and 4 months later, I re-located this footnote to an antislavery pamphlet pointing out that it was printed on linen and not cotton paper so as to avoid the material economy of slavery.... that REALLY should have made it into my book but didn't bc I forgot. Oh well. Here it is anyway.

My copy of a scarce periodical, "The Non-Slaveholder,” a Philadelphia magazine published in 1848 by Quaker abolitionists promoting “free-labour” goods, part of their movement to boycott any goods produced by slave labor.

What's the AAS pamphlet? I'm working on an exhibition for #NewberryLibrary about printing on fabric that includes handkerchiefs on cotton textiles that would benefit from citing this (crediting your discovery, of course)...

It's Sabin 63398! I didn't discover it, just meant to use it in my book and... forgot!

Could I have permission to use this image on social media and maybe in talks? I run a not-for-profit in New Zealand, encouraging people to buy food with slave-free supply chains. It'd be neat to be able to illustrate people using similar approaches with chattel slavery. heather AT justkai DOT org.nz
