Science, history, the usual. Collector of books and ephemera, most of what I post is from my own collection. Climate science.

Related, at least the meeting of Hellenistic & Eastern cultures (the article below expands the meeting of cultures), my photo of a 2nd-3rd century Buddhist stupa I took in Afghanistan in 2002. It was made during the Kushan empire, which was preceded by the Indo-Greek Kingdom in the region.

Very graphic, but the first thing the medics did was give her medicine for parasitic worms. All the kids there were one-hundred percent infected, which obviously stunted their growth, in addition to a multitude of other horrible symptoms.
Very sick, took her to medical care. I really, really, really wonder what happened to her. My 📷, 2002.

GOP Governors: "screw the poor students". They sound like Marie Antoinette.
The governors of a dozen Republican-led states — AL, AK, FL, GA, IA, MS, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, WY — opted out of a new federal food assistance program, leaving about 9.5 million students without the aid this summer

Eclectic is in my handle: here’s a photo I took in 2002 of a Soviet T-62 tank hull on a ridge near the Panjshir (Dari: "Five Lions”) River Valley. Lots of this sort of thing around the valley where the ethnic Tajik Ahmad Shah Massoud (Lion of Panjshir) lived, assassinated less than a year prior. 📷

Cézanne, seated on the left, is 38 in this 1877 photo in the garden of his friend Pissarro standing on the right. Pissarro was an early Cézanne advocate, telling his son Lucien (youngster in the photo) "If you want to learn to paint, look at Cézanne." (you can tell when I’m taking care of my dad) 🖼️

if you want a quick educated take on the 🇫🇷 elections, check out this 🧵
There are some broad points of clarity that have emerged from the French legislative elections, but much more uncertainty about the practical impact. I'll start with the points of clarity. 1. The front républicain is still viable, but it is much more febrile than even two years ago. 🧵

My dad took me to this museum a lot when I was a kid (his book). He was very active in fighting against art & literature censorship & injection of religion into the government sphere. He also flew off carriers. Now he has dementia & only cares about what the doves are saying. It goes by quick.

My copy of an early print from one of the three 1864 “Council of War” photos taken by Timothy H. O'Sullivan next to a church in Massaponax, VA, likely after a bad day for the Union troops. I used another of the three photos (via LOC) in the thread below. Grant is sitting between the two trees. 📷
On September 29, 1875, Ulysses S. Grant delivered a speech at a reunion of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee in which he argued for freedom of thought & universal education unfettered by religion. Here is an excerpt: (1/n) “I do not bring into this assemblage politics..”

And here's the article I got it from, with a nice description of a fascinating way viruses have affected evolution: www.noemamag.com/viruses-are-... And yes, I was so happy I remembered the alt text on the image, I forgot to add the 🧪 I hope including it here suffices.

A few years back I made a hybrid between these two bean varieties. My blue bush-bean is at right and Wit-rood boontje (Dutch: "White-red bean") on the left.

So, to sum up the results of this experiment... We have two simple Mendellian traits leading to white or black seeds vs in-between colors, with a temperature-sensitive allele determining if the in-between color is brown or blue. It only took about four years to get here.

@pfrazee.com hi Paul! I’m trying to set up a couple of starter packs for climate science, but when I get all the way to the end, it gives me an encouraging checkmark and a discouraging error message. Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you!

New longterm photography goal: I found a small local pond where with proper light I can get swallows skimming the water. It's a tough shot mechanically. The birds are fast, my auto focus keeps focusing on the water, and the background throws it off, plus I can't get COMPLETELY at water level. 🪶

Another old photograph, this one of the Tlingit Whale House near Klukwan, Alaska, ca. 1895 by photographers Winter & Pond. Unsurprisingly, there’s a history of attempts to acquire, steal and co-opt these cultural artifacts that are stunning in their creativity & beauty. 📷

If you live in the western USA and care about what's going on outdoors, listening to Daniel discuss weather and climate change (both? both! both is good) can be enlightening and useful. Go do it. He takes as many questions as he has time for and are relevant.

Being a GenX kid in the 80s was a drag, drinking from a garden hose and all the fancy clothes society expected you to wear.
Some Millennials in my timeline are insecure because Gen Zs are telling them their ankle socks age them. I can't stress enough that you don't need to care about what a bunch of 20-somethings think about your clothes, mainly bc you don't have to care about what ANYONE thinks about your clothes.

A Maynooth University student asked me to take this out of their sight. The exams over, they intend never again opening a boring book. Judging by its condition, I think this may have escaped the violation of being read. But then we find so many #c18th books with uncut pages. Sermons, oftentimes.
