so frustrating that medicare only covers mobility aids if they're required inside the house. so I'm stuck in here, because i don't technically need a motorized wheelchair (or scooter) as long as I'm inside.
but if i want to spend time outside, go to the mailbox? ha! sucks to be me !
i guess i could find a used one, maybe, if I'm lucky. Just to go to the mailbox, trash compactor, and maybe the pool. heck, motorized wheels would make it so i could go to medical appts on my own.
That's awful. I didn't know that.
I swear that both society and the government don't see the necessity of quality of life or independence improvements.
Yeah, they only want to cover the bare minimum, and even then only 80% of the cost.
Even a motorized wheelchair - because technically i don't even need the wheelchair to get to the nearby toilet, and can propel myself most of the time, they wouldn't cover it, even though i have exertion intolerance
when i get my bathroom redone, though, I'll be using my other toilet, and i can't walk that far and back. on days when I'm in pain and my arms are noodle-weak, I can barely propel myself, so that will be fun. 🙃
I apologize if this is something you've already considered & determined is not possible, but if you ever want help writing & sharing a GFM/crowdfunding for a chair, i'd be happy to assist if it's ever an option. i unfortunately have a lot of experience begging strangers for help w basic needs, so💁🏻♀️
Thanks! I had a GFM when i was waiting for my disability to come in, but i didn't do so well with it. I hated how obnoxious you have to be to get anywhere with it.
I'm going to try asking the local agency on disability & aging for resources before i do a crowd fund again, i think 😅
of course! i hope you can find some alternatives💕 & you're right -the way crowdfunding necessitates we water ourselves down in an attempt to become palatable enough to appeal to the widest possible audience is degrading & demoralizing -& i hate that i've done it so much i've become good at it lmao
Not according to the "what does Medicare cover" guidelines. I had thought mobility scooters for outdoors might be different, but i looked it up today and nope!
I figure it can be equally frustrating in other countries, but I'm sure the "cut as much spending as possible" contingent of our gov't (which determines the rules) doesn't help.
It's a very common story, I'm just one of many! And i do have a manual wheelchair that reclines and is very easy to maneouver, despite its weight/size, and which my ACA insurance didn't bill me for back in 2022, so I'm lucky there.
Just stinks about being stuck inside unless someone helps push me.
