Yes I, incorrectly, call spiders bugs. Yes I, incorrectly, call all invertebrates bugs. I know they are not bugs. . . . . . But they also is bugs. šŸ˜œ

So. Note: I do have the ability to sound sophisticated and speak clearly. I also like to purposefully speak incorrectly. I think itā€™s funny and it requires less thought. I also shorten words and say them stupidly. We call it my gremlin language. Melatonin has been whittled down to Mubtubs.

Iā€™m not an entomologist, but I have met quite a few, and I canā€™t think of any who doesnā€™t sometimes use ā€œbugsā€ colloquially.

I'm a big proponent of using bugs to mean all arthropods. It's the closest to how I see most people use the term, and forms a nice phylogenetic group.

Much easier to speak with the public about it too

I have to blame entomology for something, here. In standard English, just about every creepy crawly is a ā€œbug.ā€ But then entomologists went all in on their exclusivity and defined bug even more narrowly than insects. Theyā€™re just getting what they deserve here.
