Good morning y'all! I've been one poor correspondent over the last few days, as I'm in Florida enhancing the Southern edge of the corporate fiefdom. I'll regale you with swashbuckling tales of IT heroics when I return. In the meantime, I recommend the Donut Hole - www.instagram.com/donutholeflo....

The Donut Hole, a 21st century restaurant without a website. Yes, really. Judging from the line to get in, they're doing just fine without one 😜

Actually, I had forgotten about the whole jacket incident! Yeah, ok, I don't feel bad.

I don't mean to rip on Melania, bc I really have nothing against her, but she's not (with a straight face) going to say she wrote that, is she?
“Donald, the generous and caring man who I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times.” Did GPT4.o write this?

Manning - you guys are killing me here! Whoever said computer books can't be cheeky 😏

1/This for my own self-reflection later, bc my take isn't any more insightful than anyone else's. 1st: we've been lied to SO much that my 1st instinct is setup/conspiracy, so I sound ridiculous too. But I will say this: if it was, it was within the Sec Svc, for allowing a threat into the perimeter.

2/Point #2 - for the ppl saying *Trump* set it up - do you hear yourselves? If he got shot in the foot maybe, but NO ONE is taking a bullet to the head to score some political sympathy. It was dumb luck (you decide good or bad) the bullet didn't hit him between the eyes AND a spectator got killed.
Avatar
3/Point #3 - "But the ppl on the stage didn't move". Yes, bc a presidential rally (in theory) is about THE most secure venue you can be in. Plus, J4 was last week and some ppl were thinking fireworks. And it doesn't register instantaneously what's going on; it takes a few secs to parse.
Avatar
4/Point #4 - to the ppl saying "Trump/Biden is responsible for this" - NO. Our gun culture, mental illness, and lack of action on both are responsible. And Dems, get off your high horse. There's been violent rhetoric on our side too. Does it compare to the right? No, but we should condemn it too.
Avatar
5/And point #5 - Vincent Fusca, aka "JFK, Jr.": just fucking NO. It frightens me that some ppl are so far gone to believe that. Look at the QAnon thing sometime. It's hilarious, but it's scary. And it's a symptom of ppl looking for ANYTHING to believe in. There are ppl in despair in our country.

6/Look, I can't stand Donald Trump. But as I've studied our history and our govt, I've come to believe in our system of govt. If not perverted, as it's been lately, there's a simple beauty in it. But we're drifting away: a politicized Supreme Ct, pres. immunity, gerrymandering - all play a role.

7/John Adams said "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Take out the word "religious" and he's spot on. Last night was another example of the corrosion of civility and it makes me feel sad and frustrated.

Last minute biz trip incoming (outgoing?) tomorrow. I'm headed to sunny Marianna, FL for 2 days, then down to Santa Rosa working at the bossman's house for 2 days. I wish my wife was going with me, but Florida is Florida. Or maybe Flo Rida? "Shawty had them apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur..."

1/I understand the concept of not taking chances on a guy getting hurt, but quite honestly, this is why I can't hardly stand modern baseball. You have a 22 yo, 1st rookie since 95 to start the All Star game, no-hitter thru 7 innings (2nd time?) , and you pull him?? Let the kid stay in there!
Paul Skenes is so good, so young that we can’t let him try to complete no-hitters because he might get hurt. Baseball’s existential nightmare continues apace. Free for all readers: open.substack.com/pub/mollykni...

2/Look, I'm not saying we need to go back to the days of Cy Young, but imo, you do just as much damage to his psyche by making him - for the rest of his life - wonder "what if". Baseball now is nothing but calculations made by computers. There's no spontaneity in the game, and very little exciting.

3/The players make SO much money, the front office is scared to death someone's going to tear an ACL during batting practice. Combine that with the "Moneyball" bullshit; I know, it works if done right, but it makes the game boring. Love of the game? That's something only tee ballers have.

4/Once a kid hits Little League, you've got his future earnings to think about. And there's probably no way to fix it, short of blowing it up and starting all over. Hmm...where else have I heard that....

I've become a big fan of linguistics and languages. You can glean a LOT about a civilization by their language. In longer-form writing, I tend to avoid cursing, but with character limits, it's hard to impart nuance. And don't even get my started on AI. I don't even know where to fecking begin 😜

Letting my BSky peeps know I've made a decision this morning. If you've read very many of my posts, you know I've self-censored the F-word by replacing it it with fsck (shout out to the util-linux maintainers!). I don't know why, because we're all adults here. So I've decided to let it all hang out.
Avatar
And in the year of our Lord 2024, fuck is not a shocking word. But it can still be used for emphasis, and since the English language is designed for maximum efficiency, it's the easiest way to register a whole host of sentiments. So gloves off, and let's all get fucked!

Amen to that! I had to dust off the original after the show bc I hadn't heard it in a while and you are 💯! Killer sound, all the way around 😎

1/Saw Chicago + Earth Wind and Fire on Wednesday in the first show of their summer tour and man, what a SHOW! In my ignorance, I had lumped EW&F in with 70s disco bands, but Wild Cherry they definitely are NOT. I didn't realize all those songs - Star, September, Boogie Wonderland - were all 1 band!
Avatar
2/Yes, I'm aware there's a thing called the Internet, but I never put it together (I really thought "September" was Kool and the Gang). I love Chicago, the band and the city, and they're amazing in concert too. But honestly, EW&F stole the show. But here's the cool part, and why you should go...
Avatar
3/So Chicago opened, which surprised me. They didn't play "25 or 6 to 4" and the crowd was definitely kind of deflated when they left the stage. EW&F came out and blew the doors off, closing with "September", but leaving the stage at 10:15. That's early, even for older guys (like me). So, WTF?
Avatar
4/Now, Riverport Amphitheater (fsck off Hollywood Casino) is an 11:00 pm venue. It's the 21st century, so I know better than to expect ANYTHING exciting, like a band playing until 11:05, because nothing is cool anymore. But still! 10:15 and roadies are on the stage? But the lights didn't come up...
Avatar
5/And then - BAM! Chicago AND EW&F on stage together, 6 horns, 3 guitars, 40 or 50 drummers (I lost count), and they fscking rocked for another 45 minutes, closing with, of course, "25 or 6 to 4". It was spectacular! Here's a rough approximation from their tour 7 yrs ago - youtu.be/tEfxUtuQ5cw?....

6/Biggest surprise? There were multiple gaggles of 20 somethings dancing their asses off. It made me very happy to see kids keeping this music alive, and GIVING it life, bc let's be honest - folks in their 60s can't shake their moneymakers like they used to. And one more thing I thought was cool...

7/The guys are class acts. Example, Bassist Verdine White has been married for 40 years and has a "Philanthropy" section on Wiki - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdine.... The guys from Chicago are great too. A far cry from the drug-addled rockstars we're used to. Bravo to the bands for a killer show!
