For the love of all things holy, HP needs to just fsck off and die already. They can take their crappy laptops and overpriced toner and shove it straight up their ass! I used to work for on HP servers running HP-UX back in the day and they were solid as hell. What a way to ruin a company.

Just found out the wife and I will be attending the Chicago + Earth, Wind, and Fire concert later this week. We saw Chicago + Doobie Brothers last year and it was the shizz! Looking forward to my first time seeing EW&F too. Today's young cats could take a lesson in showmanship 😎

1/As a native Illinoisan, my wife's views on fireworks differ from mine. In another of life's beautiful ironies, J4 in the US combines globalism and capitalism in a big ol' free trade gumbo. For my folks in non-firework states/countries, let me give you the lowdown on 4th of July in the heartland.
Another 4J in the books! We celebrated in true #STL style, by setting fire to $500 worth of Chinese fireworks. I'd show you with a video, but I guess video embed is still a work in progress? Anyhow, 'Murica!

Two stormy mornings in a row, in Missouri, in JULY no less? God smiles upon me 🙏

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans. On this day, it's important to remember that July 4th is not about laws or politics. Yes, it IS another word for nothing left to lose, but it's not about that either. What IS it about? Jerry Garcia and the Grateful mf'ing Dead of course! Wave that flag!

1/Not just for the nerds: there's a glaring omission in my posts about hackers which I will remedy by talking about Mr. Linus Torvalds. Of all the OG hacker legends, Linus is without doubt the most impactful, not just on tech, but on capitalism itself. Without Linus, the world of 2024 doesn't exist.

1/Here comes SCOTUS with another kick in the balls. Now they've decided - contrary to 40 yrs of precedent - ALL Fed gov agency regs are within the purview of the courts, rather than deferring to the agency creating the reg. "But Matt, what does that mean?" I'm glad you asked, hypothetical person!
SCOTUS' Chevron ruling could weaken federal cybersecurity regulations, as FCC data breach reporting requirements and other rules are likely to be challenged (Cynthia Brumfield/CSO) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

1/In Doctorow's most recent post (pluralistic.net/2024/06/28/d...), he brings up the subject of tech debt, which I would guess, has played a starring role in the ransomware attacks of recent years. For non-IT folks, here's how it works, starting with in-house systems...

THE creepiest country song (or maybe just "song") of all time, "Psycho" by Eddie Noack - youtu.be/BtDLN4LoPZA?.... You have to love the delivery, and the trad country switch from a minor chord flavor back to major when he's delivering the most sinister lines. Noack had his own demons, dying in 1978.

1/Great, great article on the Ludicity blog (no, I didn't spell it wrong) about AI from someone who's deep in the field - ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-will-.... He makes a brilliant point - MOST orgs implementing AI don't do the basics right and they don't *need* AI. They're jumping on the bandwagon.

It would be cool if someone did a "liquors of the world" website about the (hopefully odd enough to be interesting) drinking habits of various cities and regions, examining why certain liquors are popular in certain places. Add a dash of tongue-in-cheek to the whole affair and I smell a winner! 🤔

Another cool account - @oldbaseballnews.bsky.social (Old Baseball News). It was the norm in the early 20th century for each team to have hometown umpires who generally ruled in their favor. Baseball was also largely attended by gamblers because you could bet on ANYTHING as the game wore on. 😏
Seems like if you think the umpire is making the wrong calls, you wouldn't want to make his vision worse, y'know? Washington Times, June 30, 1924

1/One #developer "experience" I don't miss? Browser rendering differences. When I did the 1st version of my app, IE was still very much in play (IE 11 was new). Even though I was using jQuery, I refused to support anything less than IE 10, blocking it with an "upgrade your browser" msg.
1/Venturing back into #developer territory, I had a thought about experience in relation to programming. I'm rewriting an app I began developing in '08 that's expanded over the years as the business changed. I've been a solo dev for the duration so all the good ideas - and mistakes - are all mine.

1/One other Dotnet feature I want to highlight is Language Integrated Query, aka LINQ - learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet.... LINQ is an amazing tool for #developers. The beauty is that you can query just about any type of collection - including the DB - using the same syntax.
