Brr, a chill on this 89F afternoon
Albert Camus had today's GOP's number way back in 1956. (From The Fall, translated by Justin O'Brien)

Feeling the need to celebrate one of our most helpful yard gadgets: the rock sled my husband made. It gets lots of use in our (suburban) back yard.

Hm, so this lede makes it sound like immortality is in the cards for those of us who drink coffee and sit at computers to do our work.
Sedentary coffee drinkers had a 24 percent reduced risk of mortality compared with those who sat for more than six hours and didn’t drink coffee, according to the lead author of a study published recently in the journal BMC Public Health.
More good news for coffee drinkers from a study of sitting and sippingwww.washingtonpost.com Sedentary coffee drinkers had a 24 percent reduced risk of mortality compared with sedentary non-coffee-drinkers, a researcher found.

How fitting, thank you, Nancy! I'm in southern Maine so due for partiality today.
Since I'm far from the totality today, here's a curiousity: Malevich's Englishman in Moscow. The words on the canvas read "Partial Eclipse"

Today's a keeper of a day: making easy left turns in places where there's usually traffic, good leftovers for dinner, and finding that Effin' Birds is on bsky.

It wrecks me that we're on the brink of abandoning Ukraine and seemingly no one's got the bandwidth to care much anymore.

I don't think I'd recognize a Taylor Swift song if I heard one but I can't help but give her lots of credit for the cat.
Lesson: don’t mess with cat ladies. They have claws and know how to use them.

A raucous Saturday night here in Maine with discussion of Hemingway's use of "obscenity" in "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

I've often wondered about this, too. Does anybody know where this tradition/habit comes from? On the rare occasions when I'm asked to sign books, I sign near my name (which I do not cross out) on the title page.
A question for writers who sign books at readings: Do you cross off your name on the title page of a book when signing it? If so, why? I'm genuinely wondering where this tradition comes from.

The purpose of propaganda is not to make you believe something. It is to make you believe nothing. So that you do nothing.

Thrilled to announce that my translation of "The Rattler" (Пикалка) by Leo Kaganov will appear in Asimov's. This story is scandalous in the best way; the author managed to include acrostics spelling out "Glory to Ukraine, Glory to Heroes." Which I replicated in the translation.

Hot off the press from right here in #Maine—ARCs of Vera Mutafchieva’s The Case of Cem, translated from Bulgarian by International Booker winner Angela Rodel. Booksellers and reviewers, let me know if you want one. Find out why Georgi Gospodinov calls this “a brilliant and polyphonic novel.”

This sounds like so much fun -- I wish I lived closer! I love Catlantis (a wonderful cat story for all ages), Jane is a friend, and I've enjoyed many of Starobinets's other books. ♥️
Join us Saturday, September 23rd for a double feature with the author Anna Starobinets! 11am she will be reading from her children's books, accompanied by her US translator, Jane Bugaeva. Readings in Russian and English.
